The 40 needs to go

I hate to say it but my flowmaster 40 has to go. I love the sound but the interior res is getting to the point of unbearability (i think i just made that word up). Its true that i have it dumped right now but i don't think running pipe out the rear is going to do much. I mean as of now when i get anywhere from 1800-3000 rpm most of the plastic interior pieces are rattling and shaking around. The rear glass is the worst. Other then then the rattle there is the fact that i can't hear my audio that i have just began investing in, especially when going up a hill, which we have many of here.
I hate to say it but you may be seeing a 40 series with a 3"/dual 2.5" up here pretty soon.

What are some other options, muffler wise, that would retain a nice deep sound yet allow me to hear a passenger when they are talking to me.

i was thinking maybe a flow 70 or something?

Get a Borla- has way less interior resonance.. that's why i switched from a 40 series si/do dumped to a borla proXS si/do dumped- sounded better to boot too!

A dumped pipe is always going to resonate more. For every action there is an equal and opposite reaction. The noise is bouncing around under the BIG flat bottom of the bed.

If you want to keep it.. run tail pipes out at a 45 behind the tires and do NOT put a larger tip on it. Otherwise the gibson kit is pretty mellow but has a decent tone to it. (not loud enough for my tastes though)

get the flowmaster 50 series. its a lot quieter i think.

BRENSRANGER 04-04-2007 03:36 PM

i have a flowmaster series 50 it is pretty quiet

Big04Ranger 04-04-2007 03:53 PM

run tail pipes and your prob will be solved

yup i have a 40 with it out the passenger side rear and you can hardly hear it running down the road.

whippersnapper02 04-04-2007 05:38 PM

Don't dump your exhaust. Get an exhaust system.

TORQUERULES 04-04-2007 05:43 PM

Go to the Dynomax system. Very nice.

Urandaman 04-04-2007 06:13 PM

dont buy a flowmaster? payin for the name... IMCO same design, costs 30bux, lots of options...
but i would go with a magnaflow 24" muffler.... but thats just me... i hate the raspy sound of a v6 and the magnaflow is pretty mellow from the ones i have heard

Lone-Ranger 04-04-2007 06:45 PM

well how much would running pipes effect the res.? To the side? out the back? If i could keep the exterior sound but quiet the interior that would be fine.

MonsterGuy 04-04-2007 08:35 PM

i have a 40 si/so with a 4"tip out the passanger side at a 45* after the tire and it is not loud unless u gunn it then u can hear it but driving around town i got to open my rear window and keep music down.

I say run the pipes try it out, if u still dont like it just take the muffler and buy another of ur likeing and put it back in place using the same tails.

05DSG 04-04-2007 08:40 PM

dumps are loud inside. get a pipe and you will notice a HUGE diff.

mustangsvo85 04-04-2007 08:47 PM

Ive got a Roush kit ( i think it is a magnaflow muffler? or a borla?, same design anyways) with large 3 1/2 inch tips and I removed my largest catalytic converter, no big interior resonance. I have one tiny rattle in the driver rear door that I can't find but it is easily drowned out by the road noise of the 4 door cab. My truck gets a lot of attention when I floor it, but it is very quiet in the cab and when I stay out of the throttle. As everyone has been saying, a dumped muffler makes way more in-cab noise, run it out the back and your vibrations should go away, or run it out the side for the same affect.

thanks guys i am heading out to pick up some 90*'s at the moment. i am going to fab up some shorties that take it to the side. Just to see if there would be much of a difference, i took some flex tubing that we have for a shop vac and stuck it on the end of the flow and hung them out to the side. I was really suprised as to how much quieter inside it was, and it kind of took that harshness out. That was with the tubes just sitting in the outlets and gaps on either side. i am excited to try out this new little set up. hopefully it will renew my love for the rumble!

well well well, i have seen a new side to my flowmaster that i never thought existed. Today i decided that i was going to rout some pipes out the side and in front of the rear tire. I spent most of the day looking for parts and running errands. Started work on it about noon and just finished up. here are some pics.

i started by welding up a new muffler support. This one has a nut and bolt on the muffler side to make it easier to pull the assembly off, i hate trying to pry them off the post things.

here are the pipes, pretty simple theyre only tacked in the pic.

Attachment 209110

then i set up the inner outlet pipe and got in position
Attachment 209111

from there i could work off that and set up the other, but since the muffler is angled i had to make a little fitting to make the bend right after the muffler.

and yes they need to be trimmed
Attachment 209114

after this i just made a support/spacer for the exit pipes and finished all the welds. I started it up from outside and was impressed with how different it sounded. Before it was kind of rough and when revved raspy but now it is toned down and has a deep mellow pur at idle but a nice aggressive tone up higher.
Now to see if it made any difference. I stepped into my cab and was very anxious to see if there was any difference. THERE WAS! a huge one. At idle
it sounded the same as stock, no sound. Usually when i reved it up to around 2000 rpm all the plastic pieces in the cab would start to vibrate and rattle around. I HATED IT! now i can rev to my little hearts delight and not have a single rattle, that includes the rear window!
Man i am so glad you guys talked me out of getting rid of this thing. Now i have the sound outside that i want and the lack there of inside. I can't wait untill i get my sub back in there and new set of components for the doors.
i cant thank you guys enough! Voorm voorm vroom

bwester04 04-05-2007 07:56 PM

good deal.. so what made you get dumps in the first place if you didnt want all the noise?

whippersnapper02 04-05-2007 08:05 PM

Thats why i never dumped mine. I ran with no exhaust for a week and couldn't stand it.

04lvl2 04-05-2007 08:05 PM

Glad we could help!!

Lone-Ranger 04-05-2007 08:14 PM

well at the time i did, as time went on and i was spending more and more time in the truck i grew to hate the res. and all the rattles that it caused.

but i something just stripped the smile off my face. My mom came home just a little while ago, she had taken my truck. The she walks in and pulls up a chair and she mentioned how she liked the exhaust change, but that my hella lights may be burnt out. This puzzled me for a second...then a feeling of shock hit me. I ran outside and sure enough the lights were on and i could sort of see them. I guess the smoldering, dripping plastic lense caps that had melted to the lenses may have obstucted the view. I turned the lights off and walked back inside with what was left of one of the caps. I second i asked my mother why she thoughts the lights hadent worked she turned red. "oops i may have forgotten to take the covers off..." yeah so my truck sounds good but now i have a bunch of half burnt white marshmelloy looking mess plastered to the hellas. i guess i wont be using them any time soon.

what should i do now? Try and scrape off what i can? i would like to not have to buy another set of lights.

Fx4wannabe01 04-05-2007 10:45 PM

BELIEVE ME.......run the pipe out the back. Flows w/ no tail pipe can get pretty dang annoying...not to mention the constant rattling of the rear slider.

have the tail pipe hung......you problems will be solved.

Lone-Ranger 04-06-2007 12:21 AM

well with the new pipes going out to the side i have very very little noise in the cab and still have that nice rumble outside. yeah its funny though. Now that i can hear my music better i am starting to get annoyed at how shot they are. It is definatly time to replace and upgrade. anyone have a suggestion as to a nice set of 6x8's?

I just put Infinity 6810cs comps in front and 6812cf's in back. I like them. You'll need a 90w RMS amp to drive them properly.
I currently have a 60w amp in there. They still sound nice. I also have a 110w in the box. Soon as I get the time I'll put it in and see how they sound.

Surprised to hear about the 40. I had 1 for about a year. Single in, duel out, out the rear. The res inside the cab drove me crazy.
So I took it off. Went with a Magnaflow. Like it better, but still loud at WOT. I'm sound insulating my truck now to see if that helps.

That's how mine are except the tips are about twice the diameter. It's freakin loud outside, not toooo bad inside. I can't wait to hear it with the headers!! I heard it idling and it sounded mean. They wouldn't rev it while double checking it in the shop though, lol. I was kinda disappointed about that.

Mike9825 05-18-2007 09:28 PM

hmmm, now I'm having 2nd thoughts about dumping mine, looks good though man! nice work! -Mike-
