I know you have a high mileage truck. Is it possible that a CAT is bad.

lifted97ranger Aug 21, 2007 07:02 AM

^^very possible......a plugged or plugging it would cause problems......

i would possibly look at the cat converter route........you have done just about everything else.....

have you ever installed a gasket in between the 2 intake manafolds and replaced the small rubber gaskets in the upper intake manafold? that could also be a problem.....i was getting a lean code and sure enought i had to install a gasket that wasn't there to begin with.......(also did it in my mom's '97 Explorer which the gasket wasn't there:crazy:)

BTW: my offer still stands on my truck Shane:006:

I do have a exhaust leak..............2nd
page at top https://www.ranger-forums.com/forum2...ad.php?t=47757

lifted97ranger Aug 21, 2007 07:05 AM

could very well be the exhaust leak causing it......also, it could be a bad 02 sensor....

wydopnthrtl Aug 21, 2007 07:05 AM

I doubt it's the cat. And before I saw you mention the exhaust leak.. I was thinking it's either a vacuum leak or an exhaust leak.

I say fix the exhaust then clear the code.

so try sealing up the exhaust up first.................one question if that is the answer..........how the heck can i get it togather without taking the manifold, and pipe out. As you can read on my link to my exhaust post, i had a electric impact and nothing...........also what messes me up is it's a DD!!!!

04 EDGE Aug 21, 2007 07:52 AM

looks like maybe the egr tube is leaking, can you get a better pic of that.

He is WRONG.

P0174 is monitored by Bank 2, Sensor 1 which is the sensor upstream of the cats on the driver side. It says that the mixture on that side is so lean that the calibration cannot compensate for it without exceeding a calibrated limit.

A vacuum leak is your #1 suspect when you have a lean condition, especially on just one side of the engine. I would check the intake manifold to head gaskets which are known leakers on 4.0's. Also, if you have an exhaust leak upstream of that O2 sensor, it can cause it to report an incorrect A/F mixture to the PCM.

fletch12518 Aug 23, 2007 07:29 AM

any ideas on how i can attack my exhaust leak???

brichmond Aug 23, 2007 04:05 PM

weld it close...replace pipe...you could b super cheap an get a piece of metal an a big hose clamp an close it up like that but not a good idea...how big is it

fletch12518 Aug 24, 2007 04:29 AM

I thought about welding it, but there is nooooooooooo way i can weld theside that is right next to the blck. there is no room!

fletch12518 Jan 2, 2008 04:19 AM

ok took my truck to the exhaust shop. Got the leak fixed the 31st. And my check engine light is still on? Any ideas now?

SB05EDGE Jan 2, 2008 05:50 AM

all I can see is a red "x"

lifted97ranger Jan 2, 2008 05:57 AM

did you reset the code Shane? If you didn't it will still be on.....take the negative battery cable off the battery for about 10 minutes and see if that clears it...
