It could be the timing chain, piston slap, or possibly a fuel injector.

First thing I'd do is try a thicker and fully synthetic oil.

Mines ticked since i got her...I heard someone say once"It's when the 4.0 stops ticking and making weird noises ...that's when you start to worry!"

Yea seriously. The day it goes silent I will be concerned. I haven't had a single mechanical problem with this truck in 5 years. I'll live with the ticking and just write it off as a heartbeat.

Yeah, I was gonna say it would be "the heartbeat of America," but these aren't Chevy's. (Thank God for that one...)

My Miata would do it to until the oil hit the lifters then everything would quiet down. That thicker oil idea may have merit though...

yes and no. when my engine ticks regularly, its time for about 3 quarts of oil. when its under heavy load/acceleration, then its just normal.

Mine ticks and still does.....now harder to hear with an exhaust system. Ignore it.

My F150 ticks, but its the injectors, it could just be valves or injectors, either way it wouldnt be something to worry about.
