yeah just remove the snorkle, cutting the hell out of your box wont give you any better performance. Simple and easy

I agree with the above.. snorkle removal.. no need to hack the box.. and its undo-able if you would have reason to want to.

I cut my airbox with the jig-saw like a month after having my truck. Mine has the entire front part basicaly cut out. I also drilled 10-12 small holes in the bottom of the box becasue water would build up there. Cutting only makes the engine louder, so to me it was worth i guess

I cut the whole box completely off right below the lip that holds on the filter. There is about 2inches left of the bottom part of the box and the 2 clips are still attached to the body of the truck to hold it in place. I have a K&N filter in it, I can definately hear the air being sucked in, and it seems to have a performance gain/better throttle response to stock. And in muddy/watery wheeling the water does not really hit the filter to cause any problems.

I didn't notice any power, but it does sound like an intake with the suction sound. It sound KILLER in a 4 banger, because it sounds like it's got an intake when you pin it.

Here's mine:

I did the air box mod last night. I had previously purchased a short ram intake with cone filter and that worked great, just a generic version. For some reason though I have a feeling that the filter would suck water when I'd hit a big puddle (like it would splash up thought the engine bay and some how get the exposed filter, for my last oil change showed some condensation in the motor.).

Last night a purchased a K & N drop in, removed the snorkel and small box that it fed into and used the piping from the aftermarket intake and put the intake box back together and it feels great. Seems to give as much power as before, if not a little more.

I didnt realize the boxes were so different.. Mine has crappy all plastic clips
on it... one of them broke off when I changed the filter at 20degrees out :(
So I wire-tied it

You could bolt a leaf blower to the intake box as a makeshift turbo, but wouldn't recommend it. haha

All you do to remove the box is pull up. Maybe spray the little round indents in the bottom
with wd-40 if its stubborn.

Yes you can, and it will free up you intake. Removing the air silencer will allow more air to be sucked in by the intake (less restriction)

slightly yes, but its more subjective then a fact. I myself noticed a slightly deeper and louder sound after i removed the snorkel.
