car starts up then sputters out, or sputters at idle... help!

this isnt really for me... my girlfriend has an 01 explorer sport with the 4.0 sohc. she called me today after she got out of work and said that she couldnt start her car because it would start up then almost immediately sputter out and die. she finally got it started by flooring it while starting i guess. she drove home and said on her way hope it seemed to sputter/choke at idles.

i'm thinking fuel filter, or fuel pump or something, but not really sure. anyone have any idea?

I'm thinking it's the IAC. Wouldn't hurt to change out the fuel filter too though, if it hasn't been changed out in some time.

THATS what i was trying to think of!! is that a complicated/expensive part to change out? is it something i'd be able to do, or would it defintitely require taking it in?

IAC is easy to change. Silver valve right on the top front of the intake manifold, two small bolts and a plug connector. There may be a small plastic guard over it that's easy to remove.

I think it's about 50-60 bucks and you can easily change it yourself.

you can do it....
All ya got to do is take off the little plastic 4.0L cover ontop of the engine (over the t-body).. then you will see it just chilling there (the silver thing that sits right over the t-body. Take t-body cleaner and clean it... it probably would help.

edit.. damn, im slow

Autozone/Advanced Auto/Ford Dealership I would call around and see who's cheaper. Most of the time Ford is more expensive but you never know.
