code PO455 and it wont start - help

New guy here with a new problem

The ranger won't start and the only code I pull is PO455, it says thats the evac system but I can't believe it. If I pour a little fuel in it it runs for a second or two, could it be the fuel pump?

Thanks in advance
Ken

smack the bottom of the gas tank a few (10-20) times with a hammer while cranking...see if it will start

when you turn the key to the "on" position, do you hear the fuel pump run for approx 2 seconds?

check fuel pump fuse and relay under the hood in the battery junction block (pretty sure there isnt a fuse inside the truck for it) and if the fuse is good (power on both sides of it with the key on) and the replay clicks (once when the key is turned on and once about 2 seconds later) the fuel pump is probably bad...replace the filter at the same time as the pump

I would have guessed fuel pump but the code makes no mention of fuel pump as the cause, what gives?

Go by the passenger kick panel in the cab by where a persons feet would rest. Look and see if you see a white cylinder shaped object. Press and hold it for 10 seconds with the key on then turn it off and do it again. Then try cranking the engine again and see if she fires up.

fuel cutoff switch... there should even be a warning in the engine bay, forget what the part is called, right above the radiator

We bought a fuel pump the day after I posted. Looks like it was going to be a lot of work to drop the tank (3/4 take of fuel as well) so we pulled the bed instead, only took like 30 minutes. Dropped in the new pump and she fired right up.

Thanks Justin for being so quick to reply.

For the record the codes are BS and mentioned only the evac system!

Ken

fuel pump wouldn't throw codes... otherwise you would throw those codes if you ever ran out of gas, and would have to pay someone to clear them every time...
