Coilpack replacement [ Update ]
 

The coilpack is the last thing I have to replace on this thing before I take the whole truck out with a harpoon missile. I'm having difficultly nailing the right part for sure and I want to make sure I get it right so I don't waste my time.

Ford Parts Online refers to an "1992-2006 4.0 Ignition Coil" for $105.00. There are also catagories with no parts listed (distributor, ignition module, cap, rotor, etc). Is that "Ignition Coil" the device I'm looking for? I can't find anything called a coilpack or Distributorless Ignition Module.

This part that you are looking for is called an ignition coil... Here's the Ford part # : FOTZ12029A

I just called the dealer and got the same information. They have it in stock for $106.00. Picking it up this afternoon.

whats wrong with yours? I'm so glad I don t drive a Jetta all there coil packs from factory split and short.

Something in it is arcing causing interference on all my two-way radios.

Yep. I've been putting it off for a little while due to funding (just bought a condo for myself). I can swing it now so I'm going to do it.

Still having problems? that sucks dude.

I've noticed lately, that on my UHF HT1000, I've been getting a carrier that didn't change when I accelerated or decelerated, so it looks like I have to do some investigative work too.

In other words, it didn't make a damn bit of difference and I still have the noise. I'm simply planning to blow the truck to kingdom come and sell the remaining scrap metal to make up for all the money i wasted on this problem so far.

I take it the coil did NOT fix the problem?...or was it the wrong coil?

Installed a CB radio and 2 meter radio in my '00. The CB radio receives onboard noise, but the 2 meter does not....
The following is what I have done to remove some of the onboard noises:
I have installed capacitors on the power leads, upgraded the sparkplug wires, run the power leads directly to the battery, shielded the power leads with braded grounding strap, replaced the coax from the antenna to the radio with double shielded LMR 240 coax. All of these helped some.....
Had a whistling sound that increased with engine RPMs which I identified as the alternator..... Recently upgraded the alternator to a 160A with HD rectifier and voltage regulator.... This removed the whistling sound and a little of the other background noise !!!!
The only other thing that can be done is to install a capacitor on the fuel pump power leads to remove the noise it generates.... Not sure when I will do that !!!!

I have an HF rig that goes in and out of the vehicle when I want to use it, 2 meters, and a CB. Only noise I have is the "impulse" noise from the ignition for the most part, and the noise limiter in my old Kenwood TS-430 handles that completely. The CB is only used for short range stuff offroad anyway, so it's of no consequence.

Just like you, VHF is unaffected.

Yea, it was the right coilpack and it didn't make the problem go away.

The noise is broadband radiated RF picked up by the antennas. Unfortunately filtering the power and quadrouple shielded coax won't make it go away. I can stand next to the truck with a portable radio on battery power that is totally not connected to the truck in any way and it picks up the noise.

yep mine does that too from the factory...

On my cb the "noise/signal" bar goes from blank to 4/5 full when i have the truck running.

Ditto. It sucks to not be able to hear the truckers when I have to turn the RF Gain/Squeltch so much that I cant hear anyone unless they're shouting through my window...

O well, its for the trail mostly anyways. How do the truckers do it?

Have you tried different ignition wires? maybe move your ground and power source? I do not know much about cb's and stuff, but I do know a lil about noise filtering....

I changed the ignition wires. I changed the plugs. I changed the coilpack. There's nothing left to replace unfortunately. I'm thinking about lining the hood's insulation blanket with metal and grounding it as a shield.

What about a new CB? its seems cheaper and easier to do that..

I don't own a CB!!! This is on every other two way radio I have and replacing them won't make the noise mysteriously disappear unfortunately.

I realize this will not help with the noise problem, but may provide you with somethings to think about.
After testing quite a few radios (AM, Amatuer, HF and VHF); I have discovered some radios receive more RF noise than others depending upon internal filtering and what frequencies they operate on....
The VHF radio was not affected by the onboard noise, the HF radio was affected more and the Amatuer radio was affected ALOT !!!!
The radio that I am presently using is an Old Style Cobra 148 GTL which is still affected, but not near as bad as the HF or Amatuer radios....
Unfortunately the FORD vehicles are known to have RF noise problems and the manufacturer addressed this problem some years ago by installing a capacitor inline with the fuelpump on some vehicles... Mine was not one of those vehicles....
There is another noise that is generated by the ignition, but not caused by the wires and I have had no sucess in removing.... The noise increases and decreases depending upon engine load....

That is the noise I have. Unfortunately, there doesn't seem to be any way to stop it so I'm stuck with it. The best radios on the market are effected by it so there isn't much I can do I guess.

Today I received the Factory Service Manuals that I purchased on eBay....
I was browsing thru the manual in the ignition section and to my surprise I stumbled across something that has promise.....
According to the manual there is supposed to be a Radio Ignition Interference Capacitor (PN 18801) that should be bolted to the coil pack.
The harness connector that plugs into the coil pack has a pig tail that is supposed to plug into this capacitor...
Just checked the coil pack in truck and found the pigtail is there, but NO capacitor..... The noise we both are hearing is probably generated by the lack of this capacitor...
Monday is my first day off and I will be going to Ford to purchase one....

I know exactly the part you speak of. There is a big connector on mine that is large enough to hold a small capacitor. Not sure if there is one in it or not. I suppose a good experiment could be putting a big arse capacitor inline and see what happens. I have to work tommorow, could be something for me to try in the evening or on tuesday when I'm off.
