I put on a gatorback belt last weekend to try to get rid of my squeeks and so far it has worked. However, Ever since the new belt it seems like my fan is always on, I used to be able to hear my flowmaster while the rpms get higher, now all i can hear is the fan which gets louder with rpms. Is the fan supposed to always be running? I dont think that it used to be on nearly as much as it is now. IS this normal?

 

The fan clutch could be frozen. If you cannot turn the fan freely with the engine off the clutch is frozen.

 

Ya it does not move without excessive force. I will go pick one up. Is it a big deal to replace? What needs to be removed and do i need special tools? Is it reverse thread?

 

Is it a big deal if the fan is always engaged? Will it cause damage to anything else? Or just the annoying noise? How long can I go without replacing it? How long will it take to replace? They have one at autozone for $60

 

you could get over cooling but just replace it make sure to get the loan a tool from auto zone it will make it easier

 

With the fan always engaged you will get increased fuel consumption and noise. You need a ford fan removal tool. An auto parts store can loan this to you. You will also have to remove the shroud and air intake tube. The threads on the clutch are reverse. Righty loosey, lefty tighty.

 

Its easy to replace. You need the Ford Clutch Fan Removal Tool that one piece holds onto the water pump pulley bolts, the other end wrenchs off the shaft the fan and cluch are connected to. Then the clutch bolts to the fan.

I installed a new clutch onto a ranger a while back....BUT...i had to trim some ears off the new clutch for it to fit into the hold in the ranger fan.

 

I got the clutch and the tool, I can NOT get the damn clutch off, when you turn the giant bolt the whole damn everything on te belt spins, and the tool is supposed to go on the bolts somehow that hold the water pump pulley on, and I cant figure out how to get that thing to work. Is there another way to keep everything from spinning so I can just remove the bolt? HELP!

 

You have to loosen those 4 little bolts on the pulley, slide the pulley out a little bit and slip the tool behind that. The pulley gets rusted a lot so you have to break it free with a screwdriver or pry bar or something of the sort. Also its threaded reverse thread, not standard thread.

Well I just called autozone and asked them if there was another tool kit since nothing seemed to fit, the guy told me oh ya there's another kit that says FORD on it. DAMNIT!!! all this time I have been trying to make **** fit. Nothing fits. I just gave up and put it back together Ill try another weekend.

 

I had a problem with this tool kit. The wrenches it has in the kit were too big for the clutch nut.

 

exactly, the other kit though has two long wrenches, but not the part the goes around the bolts to hold it, so maybe I need both kits?

 

how did you end up getting it off

 

I just used one of these this weekend, and this is what i found. The wrench that fits the large center nut was stretched out by the previous person who rented the kit. Put it on the floor and hammer the wrench closed again so it fits the nut as it should. It was the 36mm tool. they are poorly designed and when you put torque on em they bend and stretch out, so again, hammer it together and it'll work.

 

oh yeah, if you have a 4.0 sohc it IS NOT reverse thread, hold the waterpump bolts and turn the fan nut to the left. Lefty is loosy!

 

will this other kit have a tool that can hold the water pump bolts? He said there's only 2 pieces in it and they both look like wrenches. And Is mine an sohc? 03 ranger edge 4.0

 

If you have access to an air compressor and air hammer, i guarantee this tool will take it off. it works best with the belt still on.

^ Those are very nice and work very well. A couple guys I work with have them. You can use it for removal and install.

 

tool behind the pulley?? EXCUSE ME!!?? one end holds onto the bolts in which bolt the pulley to the pump FROM THE FRONT. The other loosens the clutch from the waterpump itsself.

 

I ran out of time and gave up after like 4 hours and put it back together. I replaced the radiator, fan, and fan clutch all at once in my jeep wrangler in about an hour. I just could not get the damn fan clutch off on my ranger. It snowed here and me and my buddies were out blowing donuts and drifting for the night and after some high continuous revs the fan works now I think. I don't hear it anymore and the engine temp gauge is normal. Hmm...

I didn't replace it. I returned everything and it just squeaks in the morning. I will get around to it again later.
