Cylinder 4 Misfire and dirty air intake ports

Cylinder 4 Misfire and dirty air intake ports
Good day all,
My father in laws 1999 Ford Ranger 4.0l recently started shuddering really bad. The engine light came on shortly thereafter and I pulled a P0304 code from it indicating a misfire on Cyl 4.
He put a sparkplug light on cyl 4 (and eventually on the others) and all plugs are good and gapped correctly.
We removed the intake and throttlebody to get better access to the fuel injectors and spark plugs. We noticed that the air intake ports on top of the engine were really dirty at the front of the engine, and noticeably cleaner at the back.

I have looked and looked for good clear information about the Ford Cologne v6 4.0l OHV engine but have so far turned up very little. Would any of you have resources that would bring me some insight?
