My 01 does that upon the 1st start up after a very cold night. Just last a sec, sounds like relays clacking.

I've had it for almost 5 years now, no engine trouble. Guess it's just another one of those Ford Ranger issues.

When its time for an oil change I use a quart of Lucas and 4 quarts of Motorcraft synthetic oil. Maybe that will help.

My engine has 2500 miles on it, makes a pen-clicking noise, it's RPM related. My 4.0 Mustang did the same exact noise. Someone on mustang forums said it was the injectors. Any ideas? It's so annoying..

Damn!
With the mustang, it quieted down at times. It'd go a few weeks quiet, then come back again...

Are you sure it would quiet down? Maybe you are just not noticing.

Well I can hear it the loudest when I'm driving nets to a curb or wall.

I hate that timing chain crap. I either force her into the next gear, or back off the pedal some. It's embrassing for me. Nice *** truck and this nasty noise.

My 2000 had a clacking noise, but it sounded like it came from the bell-housing area.. heh it also had that "chirp-chirp-chirp" when it was started cold every once in a while.
