Engine trouble
The truck is acting like it’s running out of gas, so to say. It hardly runs, and doesn’t really drive. When I put my foot to the floor, it just spits and sputters, and shoots oil into the intake. I unplug the MAF and it acts fine for a minute or two but then starts running like ****, which I expected from unplugging it. This happened while driving normally, not doing a pull or anything. Oil still looks good, and doesn’t smell like gas or anything like that. I know the 4.0 has timing chain issues, but that wouldn’t explain why it runs fine with the MAF unplugged. Still starts great, within 2 seconds of turning the key..
Sounds like you have to cross the T's and dot the I's as you go about this one.
First off, the usual questions:
What year, how many miles, are you the original owner, how long have you owned it....you know.
>> I always thought if unplugging the MAF sensor improved engine running the MAF was bad. The bad side here is that "swapping in a new part" is the next step.
This gets expensive real fast if you're mistaken. That's why it's better to first see if your vehicle is in OK shape generally.
Can you check the fuel pressure at the Schreader valve?
Gas filter clogged? Is the air filter clogged? Are there intake air leaks?
I'm new to the Rangers. Do we have camshaft and crankshaft positioning sensors which fail? A bad crankshaft positioning sensor ave me a consistent, random miss in another vehicle.
Like you say, if it runs well sometimes it's not bad timing........or ignition.

Welcome to the forum
YES, need the year of the Ranger, for sure
I would change fuel filter if you haven't in the last 5 years
Unplugging MAF tells computer to run engine on pre-set air/fuel mix tables it has in memory, so if it still runs poorly with MAF unplugged MAF is OK but fuel or air is NOT
Yes, if you can test fuel pressure that would help you diagnose it better, should be 55psi engine running, and hold at 50-55psi at 2,000RPMs steady
