Finally saw decent Gas Mileage!!!

this past weekend i drove to Penn State for my friend's 21st bday (greatest weekend ever). from my driveway to his parking lot, its exactly 198 miles.

i drove out there thursday afternoon after my last class, and got there with about an 1/8 of a tank left. usually.. i hit about 200-210, and the Check Gage light is on, and i'm filling up soon after. so right there, i saw a bit of difference, mainly becuase it was all highway miles.

on the way home, i decided to go for a record time home.. and sped most of the way. there was 2 roads i basically took all the way to my house.. Rt. 80, and 476. both are long.. long... and boring. (im on rt. 80 for about 125 miles, then on 476 for the other 75). i got home sunday night with just over a quarter tank left, at just over 200 miles. it was great. i was able to drive till today, hitting 255 miles to the tank. my gauge light wasn't on yet.. but it was just about resting on the red, so i knew it was about to happen.. so i filled up because i figured ahh what the hell..

anyway.. seeing about 260 miles to a single tank impressed me, lol.. i wonder how much further i could have gone with the gauge light on... (didnt want to walk or push to find out tho, lol).

which brings me to a question... we have 18 gallon tanks, right? any idea why my light kicks on at just over 16 gallons? do we really have a 2 gallon warning?

EDIT: forgot to mention, lol... i was impressed since it was January, and i had that ****ty gas they sell this time of year.

260/15.8 = 16.45mpg not bad, looks like you could have gone another 65 miles but that is pushing it.

it doesnt matter the size of your tank.

its liek this

Total miles / total amount of fuel added to FILL it up = MPG

so if you put 17 gallons in.

335 / 17 = 19.7mpg

Thank you!

I don't know why you guys keep comparing 'miles/tank' figures. They're utterly meaningless! One guy may fill up w/ the needle still at 1/4.. another at 1/8.. yet another in the red.. and yet another past the red! Unless you're comparing final MPG numbers, it's all meaningless!

Besides, some of our trucks have different sized tanks than others.

And you don't really think that gas gage (to use the Ford spelling) or 'check gage' idiot light is all that accurate, do you?

That said, I can get 18-19 MPG if I shift right and keep it under 70. I've nipped at 20 once or twice. I routinely get 16-17 MPG driving 'normally' and cruising just over 70 though..

i think the gas gage is so inacurate it isnt even funny. i look at mine and it will read a half tank, hammer it down read 3/4, slam on the brakes and it reads under 1/2. half the time idk what to think.

sometimes ill look at it and think, wow that is good for the amount of miles traveled. then the gauge plumits.

well it goes back to the gage being inacuarte... i normally get 335 per fill up and put about 17 gallons of my 19.5 gallon tank back...so it averages out to 17mpg... but ive never run it in the summer or on summer gas really because i got the truck in late sept../

That's good mileage on a Ranger.

When I get the low fuel light, I have about 3.5 gallons left. Weird.

Except once... towing a trailer back from Memphis to Indianapolis. I was routinely running 20 miles past when the light came on (averaging 10.5 MPG with the trailer). The last time, the low fuel light came on then I was dead on the side of the highway after 11 miles. Not cool.

Maybe the fuel pump wanted a break after being run hot too many times on that trip. Now when I tow, I carry a 5-gallon jerry can in the bed.

The other day I parked in a buddy's inclined driveway. When I went to drive away the gauge read 1/4 tank higer than it should have. It took 10 minutes for the gauge to return to where it should have been. .. Either that or I burned 1/4 tank driving 4 blocks and sitting for 5 min w/ the engine off!

I'd say you burnt of the 1/4 tank by driving the 4 blocks, I don't think it read wrong you speed demon

I've been keeping my speed limit to 75-80mph depending on the rest of the traffic. That has earned me an average of 18.25mpg lately even with my 33's. Yay Bamachips tuner and Flowmaster exhaust!

that happens to me everyday. my driveway is like a 40 degree incline. its nice to see i have half a tank one minute... then under a quarter tank the next, lol. im assumming the sensor or whatever it is, is towards the rear of the tank.

I just put a Roush exhaust and Bama X-cal 2 on mine. Haven't even finished a tank yet. If you're getting that mileage with that speed and 33's, then I should easily hit 18-20. I can't wait to get a few good tanks through it for comparison.

I checked and I got 26 mpg (corrected for 32's ) With just the e-fan mod. I'm waiting to see if the pulley I just added improves on that . I feel for you 4.0 guys.
