fuel pump??
Im having trouble lately gettin the truck to start. Ill turn the key to "prime" the fuel pump and it cranks about 4-6 seconds unless I pump the gas... fuel pump??
|
How old is the fuel filter?
|
4 months old
|
Have you ever changed the strainer?
Sadly you need to open the tank to do so. I would just replace the pump, if you gonna tear it apart. |
Clean the IAC valve and check the TPS , it may be out of range.Any codes logged ?

Plugs?? WHens the last time you changed the plugs? On my 2000 it had 170+k on original plugs. It got to the point it would be hard to start like this. I changed plugs and wires and it would start right up.
Although Josh had the same problems on his 2000 4.0 OHV, it was hard to start, and finally shut off and wouldnt start for him. Towed it home, replaced the fuel pump, and he said it ran like a whole new truck. Had MUCH more power, etc. |
I have the original plugs/wires at 132,000 so that needs changed also, Im on the verge of changing all that as it is, looks like I need to go ahead and start sooner than I thought
|
IMO change the plugs and wires first. On my 4.0 OHV, it had original plugs at 170k+. It started doing that, and got to the point it wouldnt start, especially if it was cold. Replace the plugs/wires and then we'll see what she does. If you want to bring them to the meet we can do it then..??
I changed the plugs, wires, and battery on that 2000, and I tell you, it fired RIGHT up. Lol, I think it started before I even turned the key, it was so quick ;) |
haha Ill see whats up and if I can afford it with my other parts Im buying...
|
IMHO get cheap copper plugs and replace them every year or two.
I don't need an expensive plug that lasts 100k. They are easy enough to change. |
fuel pressure test might help ya to see if the pump is going
|
Thanx brandon, I may get a jump on that.

mine's been doing the same thing for months and months now, have to turn the key 3 times and then start in order for it to turn over. i finally got a fuel pressure test done today and it's running at 65, apparently it's supposed to be between 40-65, which means the pump is good, so they checked the TB and the MAF and there was some gunk build up and they cleaned that out.. still had the problem, so they recommended a fuel injection system cleaning, which runs about 75 bucks.. i'm going to give it a shot tomorrow and i'll let you know if it works or not!

I would replace the spark plugs and wires first, mine had the same problem also, changed those out and it started right up. Don't get Bosch spark plugs, get Motorcraft.

Clayton FTW. IMO, Bosch plugs are fine too, just don't waste your dimes on the +4 and fusion scams. |
Im running original plugs and wires.... could be it
|
why would it be plugs if he has to prime the fuel pump like i do?
you turn it 3 times and wait and it starts right up if you try starting it regularly it never starts, or it takes like 10 seconds |
I see your point, however, I will stick with my guess that its the plugs. I'll bet ya.. :)
Have you changed your fuel filter recently? |
changed the filter a few months ago
|
Hmm Ok. Well, I still think that changing your plugs will make a difference.
|
i'm going to be changing my fuel filter today, as well as plugs if the filter doesn't do it. i'll keep you guys updated as well
|
Yeah, definitely let us know. How many miles are on your plugs?
|
