Gas mileage I know I know

I know this is being talked about alot but Ive been getting really bad gas milage in my truck lately....the last 3 tanks ive been getting about a lil more than 200 miles till 1/4 a tank....

I filled up when it showed 1/2 tank on the gauge and it took 9 gallons about half the gas tank...

idk what it is ive been driving mostly highway I used 93 and i got about 140 at half tank using the gauge

i only have a tonnea cover my trucks a 4.0 auto 4x4 b4000

I was thinking about getting a k and n filter but would that yeild noticeable amounts Ive been driving like a grandma barely ever getting into the 3000 rpm range

Idk if my fuel filter has been changed or not but its an option im thinking of

thanks
Tim

Don't run 93 unless you have teh computer set to run 93 octane. It will do more harm then good. Since you are stock, you should be running 87. Our tanks are 20 gallon, the 1/4 mark gives you 8 gallons left, I actually get the best mileage from the 1/4 tank to the E and then fill up with 16 gallons. A drop in air filter won't really help. How many miles a month are you driving?

First, stop running anything above regular.

Second, your gas gauge is off just like every other gas gauge on every other car in the entire country. Your gas gauge does not mean empty when it says empty. There will still be a few gallons left. The reason I know this is because I always fill up when it hits "E" and I put in about 15 gallons. That means there are about 5 left. In that 15 gallons I get about 220-240 miles. This equals out to about 14.5-16 mpg.

Now, no where did you say how many gallons you were putting in. You said how many gallons once it was to get to half. I'll tell you what though. If I let my truck sit opposed to driving the gas gauge will fluctuate. So will every other vehicle my family owns, (Grand Am, F-150, and BMW). My gas gauge also drop like a rock until about half tank or so. Ford says this is all normal and is just the way the sensor is in the tank.

Here is what I think you should do. Again, what I think... Fill up and record the gallons you put in. Divide the miles traveled by the gallons you put in. Include decimals. There you have it. Driving by how much you get per tank is completely unreliable becuase of the inconsistant gauge. You need the be measuring the gallons.

If you said you got 200 miles to 1/4 of a tank that would be about 11-12 gallons in my truck and would be about 16.5 mpg. And if you are driving mostly highway and going over 70 kiss your gas mileage goodbye. Our trucks have almost twice the face area as little cars and our gas mileage drops like a stone after 70. That coupled with your I'm assuming 4.10's and standard tires will suck gas to no end. Hope some of this helps.

odd....got my truck with 2781 miles on it in April. A week after I got it I drove out ot Pheonix, AZ. I calculated my mileage at 20.5 going to. Coming back I hit 21.something mpg. I calculated this using my tripometer and the receipt gallons readout. I was doing 80-85 when I was on highway!

This past Saturday I went on a little local trip. I was currently at approx. 18,500 miles. Filled up, zeroed the trip, and started the mpg calc process. I left from here, drove down to TX (doing 75-80 on I-10) and then observed posted speed limits as I went through El Paso, working my way to Hwy 62/180 and then up into Dell City, TX. From Dell City I took maintained dirt county roads up into Alamogordo, NM where I took 15.022 gallons to fill up. For about 75-80% of the dirt road travel I was in 4-hi, 4th and 5th gears doing 40-55 mph (that was damn awesome too!). When I filled up I was at 283.5 on my tripometer and about 1/8 inch beyond 1/2 tank mark. So 283.5/15.022 = 18.8723 mpg. Not bad for doing highway/city/4x4/highway/city/highway travel, at least in my opinion. I do believe I'm suppose to get 19 mph on highway according to Ford and I'm definitely no grandma when it comes to driving. I do rotate my tires between 5000-6000 miles and I change oil/air filter every 3000-3500 miles. Go figure

i got the mileage program put on my tuner from doug and i get around 215 per tank on 87...i usually run perforamnce but that's only if i can catch 7 cents off at the Gate on thursdays...which is tomorrow and then i don't get nearly as much maybe 184 miles if i'm lucky

i dont' know the MPG i'm running now but since gas is as low as it's probabaly gonna get, at until hurricane season ends, i'm set with 87 mileage and 93 if it corresponds to the Gate

yup, thats what i get, i need to upgrade in tires cuz the 4.10s are too low for stock tires, thats why my mileage sucks on the highway

yeah agree, if your computer is not set for it you are wasteing gas, thats why you are getting crappy milage. You are dumping a little bit of unburnt gas out your exhaust. You could also be screwing up your cat converter, those things get hot and then you dump raw gas on them.

With the lift, the rack, brushguards, and the 33's I'm averaging about 220 a tank. Like stated above, unless your using a chip that advances your timing, stick with 87 octane.

If you have an extended cab with 4 wheel drive you have the 4.0 and 4.10's (2001+).
You can double check on the door sticker. Look at the number/letter combo under axle.

4.10 LS is F7
4.10 Non-LS is 87
3.73 LS is R6
3.55 LS is R5

OK so I have the 4.10 gears, but I have no door siticker since the truck was in a wreck prior to my ownership.

What is the best size that will give me the best gas mileage for the 4.10 gears.

31s are suppose to be the ideal performance size for the 4.10, if I remember correctly.

I had 4.10's and the stock 245's for a long time and was getting about 18 mpg. But I had the 3.0 and a smaller tank.

245's are close equivalent to a 31.
