Your profile says that you have a 2003 4.0L. All 4.0L are the same SOHC engine for 2003 - there is no "high output" version.

people claim cars have a "ho" motor. High Output......rarely is there actually a HO powered vehicle. Cummins had HO motors in the dodges...only avail for the manual trucks. I've seen ranger ads that say HO....220hp...I say bologna.

It is a Super secret Edition, That was Designed By John Colletti without Knowledge of Ford, It was supposed to be destroyed, but a few made it out. Your motor has 670 in/pounds of torque at 7500 RPM's and is capable of the 1/4 mile in under 10.00 min. Hold on to that Gem, it will be worth millions someday!

what years is your friends? From 2001 and up it comes with the same SOHC 200+ HP 4.0 engine. The 4.0's before that were OHV with about 50 less HP.

The same Ranger can also have a 3.0 motor as well as a 4 cylinder. Both being less in HP over a 4.0 SOHC

Don't sweat it man, before I bought my Ranger I knew nothing about them, as Im sure many of us were in that case. If I had seen a Ranger with a 4.0 decal on it like some of the Jeeps I wouldn't have second guessed it. Now having owned one for a while and done some research and gained some very knowledgeable insight from the great peoples of this site, I, such as yourself, have and will continue to learn more about my truck.

Only thing that made them high out put if a different induction sys and different fuel injection system.....All 4.0L cherokees '91-96 were high outputs...named high output. Meaning there was no lower motor except the 4cyl.
