Intake question...

So I have a MAC intake on my 4.0 and like it a lot. Especially the sound that it makes when you accelerate. I noticed that it does pull in some hot air though. I have my ScanGauge set to check intake air temperature and it gets pretty hot with the intake on, yet it does seem to make a difference in the trucks response. I was looking at maybe replacing it with a Volant intake since it comes with the box that protects it from engine heat and from pulling hot air.

I was just curious what you guys thought and what intakes your're running, if any. I'm not sure that a Volant type intake with a filter that is protected from the engine heat would make that much of a difference. As far as MPG, eh. I can't say I'm all that concerned about it since this isn't my every day driver. I realize not many people get to say that so I'd like to get an intake that maybe doesn;t pull as much hot air as the MAC does. I guess every intake setup like the MAC will pull some hot engine air.

i'm interested to hear any actual feedback on the volant intake for our trucks also. i'm interested in one, i'd be more inclined to buy it if the canadian dollar went back up.

i've heard their quality is very good!

I would run the Volant. According to a member on here, the stock computer pulls timing when it sees anything higher than 80F degrees. So with that open air intake I'm sure you are seein that most of the time.

Thats just it, they dont do anything except suck hot air from around the engine. The stock air box draws cooler air than the "cold air" intakes like K&N

They don't do much when that's all you have. When you combine it with other mods it helps.

Right, they do have the ability to draw more air (even though its hotter). Unless you do other stuff to the engine, thats not gonna matter though. The engine will still only draw the air that it needs regardless if you have a higher flowing intake

I have a MAC and the tube gets pretty hot when the engine in warmed up. So I'm guessing the Volant would do better then since it's not metal.

Thanks for the feedback guys. You bring up some good points. I think I might try going back to stock and seeing what the temp difference is.....if I can remember how to get it back together lol

So I broke down and put the factory intake back on last night. I'm interested to see how it will affect intake air temps. I'm sure they'll be lower. Anyone wanna buy a MAC intake? lol
