Pull the silencer out of the air box will get you the same sound.

IMHO, add a washable filter. I have 163k on my drop in K&N, still looks like it did when it was new. Well once you wash it.

Save your money. The kits look good and dress-up the engine if you're into showing your rig, but for best results, use a K&N drop-in filter and remove the silencer. That being said, I DO have an aFe intake kit and eBay polished intake tube, but I show my truck in the summer. Don't belive everything that you read in ads--I have the intake kit, cat-back exhaust, run synthetic fluids, and have a tuner, and with all of that, I "only" picked-up 17 HP (dyno-proven results).

I run that intake but only because I came across a used one locally for cheap, I didnt notice any difference. I mostly just got it for a washable filter

I've heard if you get that filter and a new exhaust you can gain more horsepower. Does any body believe that?

sure you will get a little bit more power but if your doing it just for the power your pretty much wasting your money

I just got one and it said it would be about 14 more hp. I do feel a little bit more get up and go when passing like 55mph to 70mph

HOWEVER --- I drive very conservatively and my gas mileage went from almost 20mpg on the highway to 14 !!!!?!!?!?!? I'm not really sure what caused this! As I did onl purchase this for improved gas mileage and it has gone quite wrong. Could something be wrong? Could I have done something in the install to make this happen?? Btw I have a 2004 4L V6 4x4

How did you pick up around 17hp with dyno proven results? did you throw it on the dyno and see before and after results? If so wouldn't it only be whp? maybe a gain of 8-10whp if that?

I'm not being an as*hole or being a sarcastic D*ck, I was just curious.

On a side note I had an aem brute force intake on my 03 ranger 4L 4x4 and it seemed as though I lost bottom end. I might have gained a bit of high end, but that might also have been the feeling of the power coming back from the lack of bottom end. lol Who knows.

I really do want to get exhaust, headers (I know I know, they probably don't do much) and a tuner. I already have a drop in filter in the air box. I'm happy with it for now. I just want to find out how much it would help me out as far as hp. I wish these things were at least a little quicker. I hate how slow they are. (dont get me wrong, I do putt around most of the time, but when I want to go, I want to go.)

Sorry I didn't mean to jack the thread. :-(

I´ve been there too... (wishing my truck to be faster...) but I realized that the magic about this trucks (specially 2.3L ones) is about the pleasure to drive relaxed, to cruise at a decent speed where your mileage is great and you can hear a good song through the trip.
...... its like a therapy.

I've been thinking about how slow and conservatively I drive now compared to when I drove a camaro and first switched to the ranger. I'm the aggressor when need be, but generally I drive the speed limit, which is saying something for a 21 yo college kid.

no power no matter what.... that said, I did buy this kit for mine, new, for $289 so... was it worth it? meh. I have it now, it was bought a while back so the money means nothing anymore. it's louder and looks cooler, anything else is negligible.

True. The difference is that yours is a 4cyl and meant to get good mpg. the 4.0's get crappy gas mileage unless your really trying to get good mpg's. And sure, they get out of there own way but not quick enough to justify how slow they are...You know what...I'm being retarded. These trucks really aren't made to go fast and I love my truck to death but ugh I wish it was just a biiit quicker. I wouldn't mind spending a grand or a little more to gain 30-40hp or so. I doubt it's possible though. :-/
