Loosing gas mileage with Intake?
 

Has anybody lost gas mileage from their intake? I'm not sure if i am but around the time i put my intake on ive been getting about 14 miles to the gallon. I hope its not the intake because i love the power, but im trying to even out possibilities. Dont know what else it could be..but i gotta figure out! Its killing me! I mean geez..im on stock tires!

Is it clean? Have you changed driving patterns? I only noticed mpg gains when I added mine.

Well mpg is one of the main reasons i got it. I dont understand..i do drive the same though. i guess i could try cleanin it.

i have. i got alot better numbers with the stock intake.

Thats really what im afraid of.

It could also be winter gas depending on what they put in it..
I goto about 15mpg in winter from 18-20 the other 3 seasons.

On my ranger I had a cold air mac intake and lost gas mileage as well. I ended up taking it off and selling it cause it wasnt worth loosing MPG for.

^^That really sucks..i can feel the difference in power!! I cant imagine takin it away!

If you can feel the difference in power maybe your driving habits have changed?

No i mean i used to get on it everyonce in awhile, but now i do the same its just that when im pulling something i can feel the difference when i get up to speed. Its not like im racing around all the time

it really shouldn't... but i guess if other people have experienced it too then i guess it is a possibility. I put mine on about the same time as my tires so i wasn't really able to measure any change.

More power = more fuel.

It's almost always true that a "performance mod" that promises higher mileage doesn't because people use the performance and therefore use more fuel.

I've never understood how an intake would improve MPG much. Maybe someone can explain it to me.

Well the way i think about it is that its getting air more easy which is causing the motor less strain

more air into the engine = more fuel to keep up = more power = lower gas mileage

I don't see, at normal intake air levels, that the intake is very restrictive. The size and flow at mid-and-low range power (where you spend most of your driving) is not particularly straining on the engine.

So, any "power savings" to the engine with an intake will be vanishingly small.

The main benefit is that resistance is lower at the highest flow rates, which allows MORE air to flow. That's where you get in trouble, lol.

Ya if it didnt even make any mpg it would be alright...but geez i didnt get it to lose gas mileage!

But still...i dont think that it couldve dropped my mpg by 3 mpg.

an intake can help some, with a tune, it can give some good power, but personally i dont consider an intake to be a fuel mileage mod. if you noticed this drop after the weather got cold, i would blame it on the fuel additives that are used, i know that my fuel mileage goes down about 1-2 mpg in the winter, on its own

yea i got better millage with the stock intake with the face cut off it and a drop in k&n, when i had the aftermarket intake i lost millage

I must be the oddball out then? Last year I got 10-12 mpg winter depending on snow. This year the lowest I think was 12 with 4 wheel drive on all week. The reason I got mine though was that it was dirt cheap from a guy near my home. Maybe the cheapo paper filters I used before were TOO restrictive so I'm seeing a gain that actually isn't really a gain?

I guess my 3.0 was the gas mileage oddball. I got really good mileage out of my 3.0 with an intake, among other mods.

Well i dont know if its winter gas, but that might be making it worse. I put on the intake in the end of August and as far as i can remember it hasn't been that good ever since. I have had brake problems, and i still have a squealing noise, but i just dont see how that could bring it down. Im gonna clean the filter and see if that helps any. How much oil should i put on it?

hmm wierd im an 04 edge 4.0 manual 2wd

before my k&n i was getting the same pretty much between 16-20 and now after the intake im getting about 16-20.

the wierd part is after i got the intake i also went from stock wheels n tires to 32" pro comps and a 15x10" wheel

another thing i do sometimes is do the tailgate on or off thing. helps me mostly cause the weight i think and i dont get so much vibration on the freeway. its wierd i thought the same thing too tho that more air means more fuel to keep the ratio which would mean worse gas mileage. im gonna have to go with it all coming down to how we drive our cars and how we treat em. nuff said
