4.0L Underdrive Pulleys Install
Got my Underdog Underdrive Pulleys recently, and I am going to try to install them this weekend. I purchased the whole kit... crank pulley, water pump, alternator, idler, belt, etc...
Will be replacing my belt tensioner in the process... and might even do my e-fan... if I dont' have too much trouble with the pulleys.
I bought a torque wrench... a cheap one from harbor freight.. 5-80 ft-lbs because I'm pretty sure I will need it for the crank pulley?
And I'm not paying $85 to rent the tool to help remove my fan.. unless it's just impossible to get off otherwise... I have big adjustable wrenches.. that should work.
Any other things I am not thinking of? Anybody else with a 4.0 that has done this that has any tips/advice or horror stories they can share so I can avoid a huge PITA and get this done quickly? I think aside from the crank pulley, all the other ones seem pretty simple?

Yea, I was thinking it couldn't hurt to replace the seal while I was in there... I just read this thread on another forum...
http://www.********************/4-0-...-help-fix.html
^ that is from FRF... ford ranger forum... this forum has a block on that for some reason. But good info and good pics

A little update, thankfully Scott (Dixie_boysles) gave me some advice, and I found out that you need a new bolt for the crankshaft pulley when you take it out... it's a torque to yield bolt. So I did not get it it taken out, because Ford dealership had already closed and won't open again until monday and I didn't want to be stranded.
I also broke my crankshaft positioning sensor... so I get to buy a new one of those as well. Also, the replacement idler pulley had a bit of a snag.. but I figured it out, had to remove a washer. So, the only things I got on there today were the replacement stock sized idler pulley, replacement stock-sized top water pump pulley (3 bolts), and a new belt tensioner.
I broke down and rented the fan clutch removal tool... and that made things a LOT easier. I tried to get the crankshaft bolt out at first, but stopped when I found out I needed to replace it. But... it's 19mm, not 18 like the directions say.
I will be doing a How-to on this, because it's a huge pain in the a$$ and I have had a hard time finding good information to go off of, and the stuff I did find was vague and lacked pictures or videos. Hopefully it will make it easier for the next person that tries to do this mod.

Something to add... and I'm hoping someone with experience with the crankshaft pulley will chime in... but in the center of my crank pulley, where the center bolt is... there is a loose piece inside, feels like a metal circle. Any idea what that is, what purpose it serves... is my pulley broke? Doesn't make too much of a difference seeing as it's getting replaced, but I'm just curious.

Hmm, I never got the crank bolt loose... It feels like a short metal pipe.. it's feels about an inch long... and the diameter matches that of the opening on the crank pulley itself, except it's inside of it, just wiggling around free inside there. I have read where the harmonic balancer can seperate from the pulley on 4.0's... maybe that's what is happening and it needed to be replaced soon anyway?

I have to pick up the crank bolt from the stealership monday and then get a crankshaft front seal from autozone because pep boys has to special order it?
I dont know if i will try to finish it this week or if i will wait until friday to try again. I think my best option to loosen the crank bolt is to "bump" the starter, and i need to buy some pipe for breaker bar.
My impact wont fit in such a small place. It will be a minute before i have any results to post for gains and i wont have dyno proven statistics, so dont get ur hopes up.
