Okay, so my dreams of a 302 swap are up in smoke and I'm faced with purchasing another 4.0. A rebuilt complete 4.0sohc from Ford is $3819. Anyone know what "complete" includes? I should've asked the dealer when I was there but didn't cross my mind.

I've been searching and found some 4.0's that've been sitting in a boneyard. I found one with 175 miles that's been sitting since Mid - '03. What issues would need attention with a motor that hasn't been run in almost 4 years??

I also need to know this in my negotiations with the insurance company. They're trying to quote me on an engine that has sat for "at least six months, can't say for sure without doing some research" according to the guy at the salvage yard. Any inspections/looking over/maintenace to the engine needs to be pushed into their quote. I'm gonna sqeeze every dime that I can prove I'm due outta these weasels.

 

shouldn't have any problems with an engine that has sat, just need to make sure there isn't any rodents in it before firing it up......make sure it isn't seized up or anything......fresh oil, fresh coolant and so forth....

a complete rebuilt engine from a dealer usually consist of just what it says, a complete engine....block, internals, heads, lower intake, upper intake, and water pump.....the other stuff should be able to unbolt off your old engine and on to the new one (stuff like the throttle body, intake, headers, and so forth)

 

Anyway I can turn in my old engine for a core or anything?

That is, if I go with a boneyard motor and still have the old one?

I guess they'd take the old one as a core if I bought the re-man from ford.

 

some junk yards will take an old one in as a core......

you might also look at O'Reilly Auto Parts.....they sell reman engines.....also check into Jasper Engines.....

 

also, your old valve covers would be reused on a rebuilt factory engine...

 

When I got the price on that reman, my jaw dropped. The one I found with 175 miles is 100 miles from my house and they only want $1250 for it =]

Jasper engines are $3500.....those are complete rebuilds that have been stripped down to the block and are completely rebuilt with new internals and everything....they usually come with new heads and all......pull your old motor out and drop in the new one...

 

the reason for the price on the 5.0 is because there is a lot more demand for the 5.0 than the 4.0 in a reman state................

 

Can't you just buy a short block some where and transfer whats good from your engine (heads intake...) That should save a lot of money.

Oh yeah, a reman engine from Ford has a better warranty than a freakin new one! lmao

New truck/new engine = 3yr, 36k mile warranty. Whereas, reman engine = 3yr, 75k mile warranty.

WTF Ford?? I guess they trust their work more the second time around, lol.

 

Not to mention the 5.0 is alot more primitive of a Motor, than a SOHC 4.0

 

Not to be a stickler, but if you bought a ranger today the motor would be under warranty for 5 Yr/100K. Ford has a powertrain warranty now seperate than the 3/36 bumper to bumper. Not that it matters, just a point of order

If I were you, I would go with the reman from Ford. I have installed these in numerous applications(as well as their tranny's). You cant beat the warranty and from what I have been told(not stating fact here), they are reman Jasper engines. You cannot go wrong with a Jasper nor a Ford reman. If your engine block has a hole in it, they usually will not give you a core credit. The reman engines usually come complete with Heads, valve train, short block, oil pan, water pump, harmonic balancer, oil, and oil filter. I have seen them with exhaust manifolds as well! If you figure the amount of time and effort you will save going with the reman(the warranty is a bonus as well) as opposed to the used or junkyard engine, it is way more worth the money! I have worked on straight commission most of my mechanic days, I can vouch for the ease of installation and the amount of time it saves!!!

See if they will install a set of JBA headers instead of the stock ones. You could probably order them yourself and just take them in. Having the engine out should make instillation easy

 

I was thinking that but at $400 it's kinda costly right now. I still have to order new tires this week. Bank account is getting stretched as it is lately.

So far I've only been able to squeeze $2200 out of my ins company and that includes my $500 in towing bills.They only wanna give me $1700 for a "comparable" engine and labor. I was quoted at twice as much labor for a reman ford engine than they were for a junkyard engine. WTF is up with that??
