New exhaust. Suggestions?

I'm settled with the idea of replacing the exhaust on my 04 EDGE. I've been doing a lot of reading, and it really seems to me that true dual is the way to go for the deep, throaty sound that I want. But, I've also read a few accounts of people claiming that they get all the sound and power from the one in two out Y pipe from the cat back. Anyone have a definitive opinion?

While I'm thinking about it, I'd ideally like to get a small gain in MPG. I understand that there really aren't any worthwhile HP or torque gains by just replacing an exhaust. Just a nicer sound and a small mileage gain.
I'm not certain what would work best, in terms of cost-benefit. Anyone have a really smart set-up they want to brag about?

It seems everyone has differing opinions on exhaust setups.

I have SI/DO Flowmaster 40 and I've ran that for about 6 years, no complaints so far, love the sound

There are a few threads about exhausts with opinions and quality. Do a quick search and you can find them. Here is one.

I second the flowmaster 40, though mine is a single to dual outlet in the back. I would steer clear of "true" dual for one reason only...itll be gutless off the line. youll be loud as ***** but goin no where. I found my flowmaster at the junkyard and pulled it off and took it home for 30 bucks.

Magnaflow dominates the number 2 slot on exhaust sales. Flowmaster, if you believe the numbers, is the best brand to go with.

And 98, I can't read any post where someone finds it appropriate to toss "lol"s into the middle of their sentences. I get two sentences in and immediately hit backspace.

Get a SI/DO muffler. With true dual exhaust your trucks going to be pathetic

I've pretty much made up my mind. And I'm happier with the Flowmaster prices and reviews. I'm just trying to figure out which model to go with. The 40 sounds really nice.

You recommend a specific model, or are you just jockin' the brands?

I hear that flowmaster actually constricts horsepower because of the baffles. I would recommend a straight through design.

oem mufflers are chambered. Straight through muffler sounds like crap on anything except a v8. Also there's nothing wrong with true duals if the pipe is sized correctly. OP go for a 40 series flowmaster

How about the fit? I'm having a hard time fitting pipes around the lift. I might end up just getting something new (Flowmaster 40?) and take it to a Meineke and have them do it. I've even taken the spare out... I just can't seem to secure it.

Yea I dont know lol. As for fitment, I hear it is pretty hard to fit true duals underneath our trucks. I would recommend going with a single in, dual out muffler instead.

I'm not going to struggle with true dual. SIDO seems the way to go. If you think it'll fit without any big problems then I'll swap them out asap. I'll just have to find somewhere that'll do the welding, as I haven't touched a torch since tech class in the 10th grade.

I just put a Flowmaster Super 44 SI/DO on my '03 from Magnum Exhaust on e-bay, like $244, I think. (Plus $60 to have shop weld tips and hangers)
Sounds great, love it. truck runs good. Video dosen't do it any justice...

I was just looking at the 40 from the same seller. He told me that he doesn't think it will fit around the lift, though. By the way, though, your truck sounds great. That's exactly what I want.

I've run both true duals and the SI/DO. Granted the true duals was on the 3.0 but it sounded pretty good. The installer had no issue running the pipes. I was running 33x12.50's so speed was not a factor. Now on the 4.0 I have the SI/DO and out of the 3 Ranger's I've owned, this one sounds the best. I'm still running the factory cats so there's no raspiness in high RPM's. All muffler's were Flowmaster Delta 40's. I believe there may still be a sound clip on here somewhere.... I'll search through my old posts.

I ended up mounting the SIDO Delta muffler and pipes. Kit didn't include tips, though, and I'm stuck on how I want them to look. Also toying around with resonator tips... It sounds great, however.

How's the drone on the highway?? Do you remember the specs of the muffler (i.e. the in/out diameters?)
