First of all, hello from good ol'e perry county ohio. I have an 02 ranger with a 4.0l. I drive 78 miles everyday to and from work and i was wondering on how to improve my gas prices just a lil bit. I was thinking on the lines of a tonneau cover, cold air intake, and also dual exhaust. Would this help out the least bit? Thanx!

 

I don't think any of that will affect your gas prices. If it did, everyone would have a tonneau cover and dual exhaust.

If you mean fuel economy. Keep it under 3k and never give it any gas.

 

it might help out a bit, but the money you spent getting that little bit wouldnt ever be worth it

 

Howdy Chris, yes all of these things will help I have the dual exhaust and my gas milage improved 1-3 mpg. when I had my toneau cover I had better gas milage(I dont remember exact numbers) I am told that an intake will improve gas milage 1-2 mpg also. Welcome to RF. Enjoy your stay!

Thanks for the quick responses, i was planning on making these upgrades anyways. I always like my vehicles to stand out wherever i go. Plus i wouldnt mind some more horsepower and i love the sound of duals. I plan on some exterior mods also, but after i get some $$$$$

 

Yep, like everyone already said, the exhaust and tonneau will help your mpg, but to offset the money you spent to get them would take a long long time. But you said foyou were already goign to do the mods, to bottom line is that yes, you will probably see about a 2-3mpg increase. Umm as for anything else keep it as close to 2500rpm (but thats kinda common sense)

 

I'll put in my 2 cents.....

I went on a trip for about 170 mile one way trip with full load of wood in the bed of the truck...up past the side of the bed rails. Basically more weight and something to fill the void aka tonneau cover. I got 26mpg. Basically level ground. On the way back 22-23 mpg. It'll help.....as long as you don't go blow 1k on a cover, your good to go.

Now...I know it's about $400, but a BAMACHIP would be a good bet ontop of the exhaust, intake, and toneau.

I can't make any points that havent already been made, unless you want to regear your truck or change your tire size. Both of those would throw your spedometer off though.

cold air intake will most likely decrease your mpg...did for me anyways...my bamachip brought it back to stock mpg though. Exhaust seemed to gain 1mpg highway at first but thats hard to tell i get lead poisoning of the right foot at least once a tank. Ive seen excel spread sheets that show tonneaus slightly increase mpg but it would take something like 6 years or 300 tanks of gas to pay for itself (something ridiculous like that).

 

Wow man, that is insane. I could drive from one side of my town to the far opposite side then back TWICE in my town to get 78 miles!.

I was bored and calculated that if you got a cheapass honda civic that you would save $376.2 every three months. A year would pay off a thousand dollar vehicle technically. But that doesn't take into account tires/oil/insurance.

I think if you got a bama chip from Doug he could program it to just help your fuel ecomony. Ive really been trying to keep my foot off mine, but them "powered by Honda" hondas are so fun to race! Esepcially when they have huge Vtec stickers.
