Removing fan assembly

I googled which way the nut on the fan clutch should go and I've heard clock wise and counter clock wise, which way is it? I rented the tools from Autozone and have tried hammering both ways with no results, any ideas?

Generally speaking, for later Rangers, the 4.0L loosens CCW and the 3.0L loosens CW. I'm not sure that is true for every year. Take a quick look at the fan shroud - the direction is often embossed right in the plastic.
