PO401 EGR Insufficient Flow

OK new to this forum and I am not really the one completing the repairs and diagnostics just the typist...

2001 Ford Ranger XLT --- I was fueling it about a month ago and over filled the tank. The Check Engine Light came on ... I had this happen once before, put my OBDII reader on it PO402 Exhaust Gas Recirculation Flow Excessive Detected, I cleared the code and it was gone for about 50 miles then I got the PO401 code.

Recommendations I have read...
Make sure the EGR is not clogged before replacing and such...but there are no other steps what is the recommended What IF issues? And for the non mechanic in the group what damaging am I doing by NOT completing this quickly...

Thank you all
