My 1998 4.0 O seems to be toast. Looking for a used one to put in but just want to get info.
Mine 1998 B4000 manual transmission with 4.0 OHV
1- can I put a SOHC in with little wiring or transmission compatibility hassles? What needs to be done? I'd prefer to find another OHV but will look at both.
2- if the replacement comes from an automatic what things need to be addressed?
3- what other things should I know so I don't use up all my swear words?
Pic is of my truck I am trying to save.
I'm in Calgary, Alberta in case anyone near has an engine for sale. Thanks in advance
How many miles are on your '98? It appears to be in nice condition.
Why is the engine toast?
Both years (your '98 and whatever year 4.0l SOHC you might find) came with the 104 pin computer (replacement for the old 60 pin).
However, the programming of the CPU (engine management) and the data it receives from various sensors etc. send it, will differ.
I don't think that's a viable way to go.
Definitely keep it simple here. Get your engine rebuilt. Fewer steps...way less homework...doubtless it'll be cheaper.
I assume you have some kind of budget limitations.
Be super selective if you take the 28-year-old-junkyard-engine route.
I have 2 cylinders misfiring and they are both way down on compression (100 and 125 instead of 150-160)
If it were mine, I would rebuild it. Do you have the skills to do it yourself? If so, it'll save you a lot of money. Hopefully your engines heads are still good. With good heads it'll still be rather expensive but If they are cracked that'll change everything.
Again, how many miles are on your OE engine?
Two cylinders (WHICH 2, by the way?) might be all that's wrong.
Maybe you've only 2 burned exhaust valves...a problem possibly fixed by a "valve job".....head off...fix the valves IF YOU CAN...reinstall.
Or, if your engine has 640,000 km on it, It might be 'burned toast" and completely shot.
Then you can order one of those rebuilds and be remedied quickly.
The rebuild linked seems reasonably priced. To a degree, you should be glad you have an OHV engine.
The 4.0l SOHC in my Ranger costs quite a bit more.
