Ive got this soft knock sound when my truck runs and i swore it was a thrown rod or something but i looked on an all data computer on my truck and it said that this could be carbon buildup in the combustion chamber(is this the cylinder?). Could this be true, and if so what should i do to fix it?

 

You could try running a couple cans of fuel injector cleaner with techron through it...
It could be alot of different things.

i heard the best thing to clean carbon build up is GM Top Engine cleaner

u pour it into any vaccuum of the engine, and it'll clean it out brand new

theres also a pour in product called XPR that will do the same thing, u just pour it in the gas tank and it'll eat all the carbon away...

i havent tried either yet, as i cant find any, but i'l do it asap, this is a problem i have as well...

 

ya the only thing ive tried is sea foam in the gas tank but it didnt work.

 

yah, just try either of those products if u can get a hold of them

most people are leery of "mechanic in a bottle" type deals, but they do work...but there are also a lot of fakes out there....

So many of those 'pour in the gas tank' solutions are BS, I really am leary about which ones actually do any good. I mean, how usefull can a product be when you have 8 ounces in a 20 gallon tank.

I heard spraying seafoam into the tb was a good cleanout technique.

i think my valves are rattling...will a top engine cleaner or carbon remover take care of this?

kinda sounds like marbles are in the engine when its parked or idle...

A TEC will not likely get rid of a valve rattle unless there is that much carbon in the cylinders and valves. It that is the case then it will affect the running of your vehicle. Have you tried a GM dealer for the engine cleaner? I know in california among a few other states they will only sell a 24mL bottle and not to the general public. It is pretty expensive from the dealer as well, last I can remember was upwards of $16 a can. When and if you do this take the liquid in very slow so you dont hydrolock the engine, that would be not in your best interest.

 

true, and then change the oil asap...it'll royallly f things up if iti got inside the enigne

My friend's real big with his Honda and on forums all the time. They said to use Sea Foam, as mentioned in this thread. His accord has about 260,000 miles and he put 1/3 bottle in the TB, it smoked white for a good 20min running at idle. He said it runs alot better, smoother, more power, and he knows what he's talking about. I put the same amount in my 4.0 and a tid bit of white smoke came out for a few seconds, i have only 38,000 miles so it probably didn't do too much, haven't driven too far from where I did it so I couldn't see if it changed anything on mine.
It's good for putting in gas, oil, pretty much everything, as read on the bottle.
Available at i guess any auto parts store for around $5

i could never explian how it sounded! haha so that makes 3 of us...

as for the GM stuff, i know someone at a chevy dealership, i may try getting some of that.. i have also heard from wayne, just a fine mist of water at about 3000 rpms..

Keep in mind the "marbling" sound that some '98-'00 4.0L OHVs are prone to. Apparantly in '98 the pistons were redesigned in order to reduce the engine's overall recipricating mass and hence improve NVH. Unfortunately, this change also resulted in the piston being able to move around in the bore which can sound like marbles rattling around in a can. For whatever reason, the noise seems to be most noticeable right after an oil change. From all accounts (thus far), the condition does not pose any threat to engine performance or longevity. although I have a 4 cyl, I poured maybe a 1/4 of seafoam through the brake boaster line, waited the 5 mins to start it up, and it really didn't smoke much at all, just very lightly and you couldn't hardly notice it.......it smoked more when you reved it but only for like 10 secs.......its got 140k miles on it so I figured it would do more.
