running no cats

Ok, so im pretty sure my cats are clogged, so im going to unbolt them tomorrow and find out. If they are, Will it hurt anything to just take them out and run a straight pipe? Im not worried about emissions, or loudness...

and How do you get the cats off without getting the CEL to come on?

99offroadrngr 10-04-2009 12:09 PM

im almost positive you'll have a cel cuz you'll have to take out the o2 sensors. be ready for it to sould like **** too lol

God,Country,FORD 10-04-2009 12:29 PM

haha, i was really hoping that it would sound as good as my wifes I6. Its running with just the headers right now. sounds like a BEAST! lol

fabioonachopper 10-04-2009 06:36 PM

with no o2 sensors your truck will run in retard mode and you'll be wasting fuel. your timing will be retarded without them

TheStig88 10-04-2009 06:41 PM

Meow?!!

Toreador4x4 10-04-2009 06:41 PM

your timing will not be retarded without them

if your CEL is on after you cut them off, your computer will be running in open loop
open loop is a default mode where the computer is operating on pre determined settings.
there was a PCM update available for 98-00 rangers for premature catalyst failure codes. this update shuts off the downstream 02 sensor. it was done to my truck, i have no CEL, no cats, and it doesnt sound like s*** i dont think.
if the light is on, you can order MIL eliminators that are inline resistors that plug in and give the 02 sensor a false reading that makes the computer think they are still there

God,Country,FORD 10-05-2009 03:40 AM

hmm. thanks justing. i iwll have to look into that

Jp7 10-05-2009 11:36 AM

Do the Evo/STI defouler trick and you can run catless for the cost of 5$ per converter. I did it on a number of vehicles with the exact same problem and perfect results.

God,Country,FORD 10-05-2009 11:38 AM

um whatis the evo/sti defouler trick? lol

This is what I found on Google..

It dosent make a difference in sound until you get enough flow passing through. On my IX I can't tell a difference until I'm in boost, which means there is a significant amount of flow resulting in a much different sound (very ferrari-like)

If you have big cams expect flames during shifts.

The civic web link above is really an excellent explanation. I would purchase the "help" brand defoulers they sell at autozone, pepboys, ect. You can get a pair of 2 for 5$. On a Y-pipe setup thats 10$ for the fix. I think the part number I used was 42002, or 42009.

God,Country,FORD 10-05-2009 03:44 PM

hmmm.. So I really like how justins truck sounds.. how loud is it? And when i do this, how do i bypass the o2 sensors or what not?

Toreador4x4 10-05-2009 09:21 PM

thanks, since you are in germany you may not be able to get the pcm update so id try it without doing anything to the o2s and see if you get a CEL, if you do try the defouler first

Toreador4x4 10-05-2009 09:22 PM

and i bet you like how big a BL truck looks when a 3'9'' midget has to jump in!

wydopnthrtl 10-06-2009 03:54 AM

What you really ought to do is just turn off the rear 02s with a tune.

(your PCM needs the front ones to run the engine at the proper a/f ratio)

Also, If you replace the stock muffler I'd go with a quieter one. Something like a flow 50 series.

thats what i have and im really happy with it. my dads 93 had no cats and a magnaflow and it sounded good too

ranger + no cats+ loud muffler = fail

God,Country,FORD 10-06-2009 01:37 PM

i have a gibson muffler right now.. so could a guy tune the computer to run properly without either of the O2 sensors?

The front hego is NOT for emissions purposes, it checks to make sure your AFR is switching around 14.7, like it should be.

Why would you want to eliminate this?
