Icon4 HELP! 99 4.0 Ranger P0340

Hello all,

I actually have a 99 Mazda B4000, but we all know I really have a ranger. Great truck so far, but I can't figure out this pesky code, P0340. This refers to the camshaft position sensor.

My truck runs fine except I get poor gas mileage (about 12 MPG). I replaced the sensor already (NOT the synchronizer) and this didn't get rid of the problem. I took a metal rod and put it up on the synchronizer while the truck was running and didn't hear any squeaking, so I'm assuming my synchronizer and sensor are good at this point.

What else can I check? I'd like to check the wiring, but I don't really know how I can do that. Maybe someone can walk me through how I would go through doing that? Other than the wiring, the only thing I could think is a bad computer.

I'd like your thoughts on how I can resolve this check engine light.

UPDATE: Took it to a shop. The mechanic is certain that the synchronizer is bad, solely because I didn't change it when I changed the sensor. He said that if I don't change them out as a unit, then my new sensor will not work. I personally don't see how this is the case. The top of my synchronizer looked great when I replaced the sensor so I don't see how the old synchronizer can ruin the new sensor. But, I guess I'll take an expensive chance and replace the synchronizer and sensor again.

Any help would be great.
