Buy a kit, you can get one from Eagle for $1000. It comes with new crank, rods, pistons, rings, bearings, flywheel, balancer. I bought mine through Summit. The only block modifications that are required are boring and slightly clearanceing the bottom of the cylinder walls. It is no big deal at all. A die grinder makes short work of it. If you run a slightly larger cam you will get a TON of bottom end torque because of the longer stroke. You should run at least GT40 heads and intake (come stock on Exploder 5.0s). I would suggest the Torque Monsters for sure, and probable do a roller rocker conversion. You will want to run the 4R70W trans behind it with an Explorer computer/wiring harness. This is another factor with the cam, you can't go too big because the stock torque converter won't like it.

Chevys belong in chevys, fords in fords. If he wants to keep the stock gauges, any of the wiring, and fuel injection. The only option is a ford engine. Well, anything is possible, but it wouldn't be worth it. The Chevy would be a straight up *****, distributor in the way, too wide for an AC box, longer than a 302 so youd have to run a short water pump... the list of complications is endless. For a 302, there are almost NONE.

You can upgrade the converter, but they are EXPENSIVE! They are a lock up type, and you really don't want to change it. Trust me... Besides, like you said, you don't want to pass firetrucks or pull stumps, so you don't need to try and build a hot rod. It makes everything a pain. You can build a 347, add a slightly larger cam, do some mild head work with roller rockers, slap on some TM headers, and have one hell of an engine. And the best part is, you can run it on a stock computer and in front of the stock explorer trans.

It really depends on how much power you want to put down to the wheels. And when you want it.
If you go the V8 route.. go with a short stroke motor. A 5.0L is a good choice.
And keep in mind that the rest of the drivetrain needs to be able to take it too.
Personally, I vote for a mild non-boosted 5.0L punched 0.030", B-303 cam, gt40 heads, SS valves, matching springs, roller rockers, cobra intake, 70mm TB, and a full SS exhaust.
(You'll need the short FEAD out of a 5.0L explorer)
That motor ought to last forever. And it won't put out to much TQ down low where you can break drivettrain parts more easily.

Guy who said that a 460 is junk is an idiot. FACT- Junk yard 460 with only pistons made its way from the JY to the track and ran in the 6's in two days. Name any other block that can do that. NEXT question. The 302 barely weighs more than as 4.0.

355 beeing a chevy engine....hahahaha....you can get a .40 over piston in a 302 and a custom stroke crank and make it a 350 if you wanted.
Personally i would get a complete explorer 5.0, change the camp, put a dizzy in it with a a9l cpu and hello tq monster that would get that ranger up and going.

i would pull a whole drive line out of a V8 explorer and put that 302 out to a 347 then you still have a tranny that works the wiring is pretty much the same. the tranny will fit in the tunnel good and you can use your stock tcase of the one from the explorer. Also i would get a BL so you have more room and you dont have to chop the heater box like crazy. will all the worked stated above by Tyler G that motor should make around 300-350 hp and probably close to the same number int TQ. that would be a hell of a motor for a weekend wheeler and DD.

The V6 has no future... even if you put a blower on it, all you really end up with is High RPM horsepower. And that will cost at least $3000 just for the blower. I know Zach has 37s and a straight axle and all, but his complaints are that the boosted 4.0 makes power in the wrong areas. You will have the same problems. The weight factor is slim, and since the swap is so easy, the PITA factor is also small. By the way, you will not have to do anything to the heater box, even without a body lift. It will clear on 93 and up Rangers. The older body style trucks are the ones that require this mod. I agree with red91stang, the b303 is way out dated. The alphabet cams were good in their day, but technology has vastly improved our cam profile designs. Downey, with a 347 and a moderate cam with GT40 heads and intake (explorer parts), your 350 HP is spot on, however, with that long stroke, the torque would be more around 375-400. My 347 makes 430 HP at 5800 RPM, and 380 Lb/Ft at 4000. But my cam and heads are WAY bigger, so while my HP numbers ar large, my Torque suffers a little. With the smaller head ports, valves, and cam, the velocity of the A/F will be higher, and the torque will reflect that with a very large number...

351.....351 lol just get that my dads mustang has that and i think its great, but me personally the rangers a 6 id make it a v8 slasher lol even if you have to rev it but if you dont drive really fast you can drive it "normally" and get better mpg than an 8, all you gotta do is get a 4.0 have it bored and stroked with forged internals along with machined heads and a blower with nitrous and you got v8+ power.
