Vin E & Vin X
Vin E & Vin X
Every time I go to look up a filter, I'm asked if I have the Vin E or Vin X. I've always wondered what the difference is. I assume [let the flaming begin
] that my VIN will have an E or an X somewhere in it.

Its the Engine Code. I'm sure I have this backwards, but I think that the E is for the newer, SOHC, and the X is for the older 4.0 OHC.

Thanks for the reply, but I don't think thats it. You will see a listing for the 2001 Ranger and will have to choose from the following...
V6 245 4.0L F.I. (VIN X)
V6 245 4.0L F.I. (VIN E)
They each have different part numbers for oil/fuel filters. Since only the SOHC 4.0 [not the OHV 4.0] was available in 01 and up, I'm curious about the difference. Also each VIN choice asks if it made before, or after, 5-14-01. Here is an example from Purolator's web site...

Thier site is not correct.
That digit is the engine code, and that is correct. "X" is the OHV and "E" is the "SOHC",
Many manufacturers dont check to closely at what years engine were present, they just know there are two options out there.
