what motor fits what years?

ok guys im looking for a winter project my plan is to find a 4.0 cheap and re build it maybe put in a cam. im going to be poring and polishing the heads and just freshening it up.
my question is what years / models will be a plug / bolt and play swap
i have a 97 4.0 2wd auto 4r44e.
is the explorer the same thing?

i think it is the same thing because the explorer uses the same 4.0L v6 motor as the ranger and the explorer is based on the ranger im not 100% sure though

Look up the ranger engine on car-part.com and it will pull up engines from all the compatible vehicles.

Ford sold two different versions of the 4.0 in the 1997 Explorer - OHV and SOHC. Early SOHCs are trouble prone and should be avoided. The 96~97 Ex 4.0 OHV might work using the Ranger harness and PCM but a 95~97 Ranger 4.0 OHV will be the "safest" donor.

complete motor with all acc. and wiring
he wants 500$ for kinda high for what i want to do with it . let me know what you guts think
i was going to ask for the vin # and carfax it just too see if the miles are right
