What year did Ford Fix the Timning Chain Rattle?
I need to put a junkyard motor in my 01 Ranger. I want to know what years to look for

zabeard 03-13-2007 06:00 AM

2003

but they did fix some earlier trucks under a recall

Quiefinator 03-13-2007 01:27 PM

so there was a recall for this???

cause i took my 02 and they didnt say anything about that

Ozarkruffrider 03-13-2007 05:20 PM

GOOD GAWD-----IT'S A EPIDEMIC!!! Just had to replace mine for that same problem. Tensioner seized up and the chain was rattling and grinding against it. Had my mechanic just put in an '03 engine and he told me it runs like a top! Watch the VIN letter to make sure it matches.

FMD 03-13-2007 05:45 PM

um, ford actually DID NOT fix this issue, since mine is an 04, and mine rattles.

Sonic_03 03-13-2007 05:59 PM

mine doesnt...its an 03

l2en 03-13-2007 06:02 PM

you dont know what you are hearing.

who really cares if it makes noise. have you ever had anyone say it broke? maybe 2 or 3 people...

3rd Ranger 03-14-2007 10:28 PM

around 03. my 03 was built in nov 02 now with 45k miles and no rattle yet. I've driven a used 02 with ~25k miles It had the timing chain rattle. I have yet to hear of any that have actually broke and destroyed the engine.

SteveOh 03-14-2007 10:30 PM

Heres my personal motto if isnt broke dont fix it.. my timing chain rattles but i could care less it isnt hurting the engine so why fawk with it?

I have 82,000 miles on my 03 and for the last 5k or so I have noticed it, ****ers.

IN2 FX4 03-16-2007 12:16 PM

This problem does not happen to all 4.0 SOHC engines. It was more of a problem in 01 but it also happened to some 02 engines. Mine has over 70,000 miles on it and I have never gotten a single rattle out of the timing chain. It seems if an engine has the problem, it is difficult to fix. If it does not have the problem at low mileage it is usually good to go for many miles.

FMD 03-16-2007 04:21 PM

mine has had the rattle since about 10,000 miles or so. whined to the dealer, they said it was normal. come to find out, to change that chain is a HUGE job, u gotta pull the engine.

bryanjints 03-16-2007 04:24 PM

Is this only a problem in SOHC and not OHV. I ask because i have a sort of rattle on startup but I have a OHV.

Here's the condition I had on my pre-owned '01 Ranger. The extended warranty folks paid for the repair, minus my deductible. Hope it helps.

Engine - Timing Chain Rattle Noise

TSB 04-15-4

08/09/04

RATTLE NOISE FROM PRIMARY CHAIN DRIVE AREA
2000-3000 RPM - 4.0L SOHC ENGINE

FORD:
1999-2002 Explorer
2001-2002 Explorer Sport Trac,
Explorer Sport, Ranger

MERCURY:
1999-2002 Mountaineer

This article supersedes TSB 02-08-01 to update part numbers and add a labor operation for vehicles with auxiliary air conditioning.

ISSUE

Some vehicles equipped with the 4.0 SOHC (single over-head cam) engine may exhibit a primary timing chain rattle noise. The noise is heard during hot and cold engine operation (but mainly heard on cold engines) under acceleration, typically at 2400-2500 RPM. To verify concern, accelerate in 2nd gear between 2000 and 3000 RPM and listen for rattle noise that sounds similar to spark knock. This may be caused by the primary timing chain tensioner system.

ACTION

Replace the Primary Timing Chain Tensioner, Chain Guide, Jackshaft and Crankshaft Sprockets with a Primary Timing Chain Tensioner Kit. The Kit includes an improved Primary Chain Tensioner, as well as updated Primary Chain Guide, Primary Jackshaft, and Crankshaft Sprockets. Required fasteners, Primary Timing Chain, and Front Cover Gaskets are also included. Refer to the following Service Procedure for details.

SERVICE PROCEDURE

Verify the condition. Obtain the correct Primary Timing Chain Tensioner Kit and follow the instruction sheet supplied with the Kit.
