Why does

My 2001 edge suck up so much gas? i took it to the dealership and they said it was getting 14.5MPG. for some reason that dont sound right. I dont beat on it and i go the speed limit. The engine is stock, could that be a problem? I plan on putting an exhaust, intake, throttle body spacer, and getting a chip for it in the future. Will any of those help the gas milage? people told me the chip would but i dont know about that. I have the 4.0 BTW

wydopnthrtl 05-25-2007 10:03 AM

Well.. it's most likely a combination of things vs just one.

How many miles and what tires do you have?

Rich

EdgeFireFighter 05-25-2007 10:05 AM

the most i ever got out of a full tank of gas is 155miles, it sucks i know especially with the price of gas now.

Milage is 48XXX, and the tires are stock 245/75/16

I got a ? Someone tryed telling me if i drive with O/D off ill get better gas milage is that true? (i turn o/d on on the highway

Redneckstone 05-25-2007 10:09 AM

little hint.. throttle body spacers do NOTHING but whistle.. its been dyno proven you will just be wasting your money...

and start with this.. do new plugs. check your air filter. if auto and never done trans flush do that then there is fuel injector cleaner, get a tuner from Bama chips

it should be on ALL THE TIME unless towing something

greygooseranger 05-25-2007 10:14 AM

This just boggles my mind that people are getting this kind of mileage.... First off, if you are getting 155 miles out of a tank, at 19.5 gallons that would be 7.94 MPG if you have an extended cab, and 9.68 if you have a reg. cab, so I doubt that. Second, how do you figure 14.5mpg and then say you get 155 per tank, that makes no sense as well...

Yeah, something is wrong with your math because my truck is getting 15 town/18 hwy (way more then 155 a tank) with 4.0, 4.10s, and 33 in. mud tires.

DerangedPony 05-25-2007 10:28 AM

I would leave o/d off when driving under 2300 rpm (in town). It seemed like I got somewhat better mpg while doing this when my truck was stock. It sucks up alot of gas when it keeps downshifting and trying to pull it's self up a hill using low rpms.

theres your problem with O/D off your RPMS are higher thus using more gas...

What I'm trying to say, I use to have O/D off while in town doing nothing over 45 mph. I dont want to say I saw a huge gain in mpg, but I didnt like having the truck downshift on some hills. Now, with the 33s, the truck does fine with o/d on at all time.....so in the long runs I guess it doesnt matter.

KARPE 05-25-2007 10:59 AM

fill up your tires to the correct PSI, clean out your airbox for your intake, change the fluids, back of the accelerator, use less A/C. then you might get back around the normal 17-19.

I don't run the O/D unless I'm doing over 60 mph, it's harder on the tranny, that's why O/D comes after 5th

Overdrive is 5th, not after 5th.....

zabeard 05-25-2007 11:12 AM

like Zach said you should not even be messing with the o/d button unless you are towing something...

And some of you wonder why u get bad mpg numbers.

I'm almost 100% sure at 45 you wont get into O/D, could be wrong but i know mine does not.

EdgeFireFighter 05-25-2007 11:38 AM

I dont take it off its just what one of my friends say. As of me saying the 14.5, thats what they said when the dealership changed the oil. They said they pluged it into the comp and it came up saying 14.5. But if its saying im getting 14.5 i cant understand why im getting 155 a tank. I dont know what size tank's edge models have but its a apin in the ass going to the gas station every 3days.

i made sure they changed the air filter every time.

So if i put exhaust and intake how much will it help? Will i even notice it. I want a exhaust regardless. I found a gibson cat back that exits behind the wheels for $380. is that a good price? I cant think of anything else. I love the truck other than the gas problem. I'm starting to think if i should get a diesel, there cheaper right now $2.99

greygooseranger 05-25-2007 11:45 AM

I listed tank sizes above. If you have a reg. cab its 16 ( I think ) and if its extended its 19.5. Again I will ask how you are calculating you MPG? I find it almost impossible for a SOHC (all stock) to be running 7.9 to 9.6 MPG. You have no check engine lights and the truck runs good?

wydopnthrtl 05-25-2007 11:53 AM

Alright, first things first. Over the next three tanks of gas.. fill it up all the way and reset the trip odometer each time. Then figure out your own milage and avg the three. This will be far more accurate that what people tell you.

Miles traveled = A

Gallons put in = B

A/B= MPG for that one tank full.

Add the three MPG's from the three tanks your going to run and then devide by three.

Here is an example:

300 miles / 15 gallons = 20mpg
310 miles / 15 gallons = 20.67mpg
320 miles / 15 gallons = 21.33mpg

20+20.67+21.33 = 62
62/3 = 20.67

20.67 would be a fairly accurate MPG number to get a good understanding of what you are really getting.

Now if you really were getting 14.5mpg.. you'd drive 217.5miles and put exactly 15 gallons in.

on the note of the mods you are talking
i have 04 4.0 ext 4x4
from the factory my truck got about 12mpg-i always check my milage per tank with the above equations-and it was consistant every time i filled up the tank
I have a K&N intake and magnaflow dual exhaust
when intake added i varied from 17-20mpg each fill up
when exhaust added i now get a consistant 18 mpg(yes i have fairly heavy foot-i blame it all on the steel toe boots :sgrin: ) and if i can keep my foot off the gas i have gotten 20-22mpg
as far as type of exhaust i recommend the magnaflow dual exhaust-it sounds so nice for a V6-has that low rumble at idle and deep rumble when you stomp on the gas-but it is a little pricey($539 i think)
the gibson exhaust is a good system but if i remember correctly they are real quiet
just my opinion
although i have noticed that when it gets cold and i run the heater more i only get 14-15mpg

jasonsfx4 05-27-2007 08:16 AM

i know what u mean about the like 155 miles and you gotta fill it up. my edge takes roughly 10-11 gal to fill at 1/4 a tank but i get 17 mpg when i haqd 35's i got like 11-13 now i have 265's

the o.d. is always on when you start the truck. if you depress the button on the lever, then the o.d. is off. turning the o.d. "off" will hurt gas mileage. and is really just for towing purposes.

06fx4 L2 05-27-2007 03:36 PM

well unless you recalculated your speedo when you change your tires your going to get conflicting mpg gallon readings..

and the OD is controlled by the computer it IS NOT ON at 25mph so even if the switch is "on" the transmission is in whatever gear is optimal... yes i do think the overdrive comes on alittle to early but its not "on, meaning engaged all the time)

Your intake added 5 - 8 MPG ???????

EdgeFireFighter 05-28-2007 08:50 PM

So if im getting 14.5 now. If i add a intake and exhaust, from what you guys are saying im gona get like 20mpg????

MonsterGuy 05-29-2007 04:30 AM

it varys from truck to truck i have cold air intake, Flowmaster Dual exhaust 40's, very high end plugs and wires, and i run seafoam and fuel injector cleaner every other oil change and i use Full Synthetic 5w-30 oil.
next will be full synthetic tranny and diff change.

and i get 9-10 in winter and now i'm getting 16-18 in warmer weather.

also the Gibson exhaust is very quiet almost quieter then stock. if u want sound Dont get it. Magnaflow is good for both and if u want even more sound get a Flowmaster like mine. had a shop Custome make the exhaust actualy it was Meineke. i love my flowmaster and will get another for other trucks also.

chack out my link to my exhaust below in the red letters, just click

99ranger21 05-29-2007 06:47 AM

i only get only 14.6-15.8 mpg, with around 248 miles per tank when i fill up and put in about 16 or so gallons, i only got 15.8 when i put in some 0-60 octane booster and my tires and engine are the same as yours, with only 78xxx miles on the engine and the only mod is removing the air silencer and 2" blocks and my gas milage sucks ass
