305 in a ranger?

heres the deal. a guy i know is giving away a running 305. the only reason he took it out of his truck is because he put a 350 in it. Its free 305 i just wanna know is it worth it. i know its a chevy motor and i will have to get a chevy trans. its got a carb so no injection. i would just have to fab some engine mounts and what ever else i needed. what kinda other stuff will i need?

GM 305s are less than stellar. i would seriously avoid them. yes they can make power but its not as easy like a 302. they are fairly realible and run decent but id pass.

check emissions laws and what not. I know here in Texas you have to have a same year engine or newer engine going in a vehicle. If you have an 01 here you qould have to put an 01 or newer motor in it.

You cant put that carb motor in your new vehicle. Law wont prohibit it.

depends if you ever plan to drive it on the street. you can just not get tags for it and tow it to the track, and use it offroad, but you can never drive it on streets

umm, u can put any motor in anything u want unless the smog ***** say so. it goes state by state.

but anyway, as i said i wouldnt use the 305. a 302 stroked to a 331 with a good set of AFR heads, good bumpstick and long tube headers will rock.

man we just built a 305 in autotech and put it into the truck and it ran pretty good not like a 302 tho with some goodies.. i would just do a 302 and sell the 305! make some money if your friend is just going to give it to you...

well theres nothing wrong with a carburetor but, first, its probably not legal, second, with the amount of time and fabwork it would take to make it work, youd be better off with a ford V8, since swap kits are made for it, or hell, just fork out the cash for a supercharger and leave it at that

Yeah a Superchargered 4.0L will do dandy when rollin on 37's. And look into a custom Bama tune from Doug while your at it.

bro... that would take sooooo much money... omg... i wish i had money. anyways.... if you wanna drop that engine into a truck, my suggestion would be to do it to and older truck that doesnt cost you a lot. i wouldnt wanna do it to a truck thats 4 years old. but hey.. it is your truck, and what cops dont know wont hurt 'em!

well ill prob go with a 302 and build from there ive been looking around. the 305 was just an idea since it was free. but i didnt like the idea of dropping a chevy motor into a ford. the only reason i dont wanna do the EFI is because of computer tuning and stuff like that. but looking around ive seen whole computers to swap out and make the engine run with our trucks so i may just do that or find someone that can rig the harness ive seen a company do that fo hemi swaps into jeeps so i may give them a call. they do all the wiring and i just hook it up.

All I can say is: "Been there, done that" and doin one for myself now.

All personal preference, when it comes to interchangin parts & cost of buildin a V8, Chevy wins HANDS DOWN!!! That's a FACT!!! Ya don't have to have an interchange manual to build one.

My everyday driver is a 04 F150 Heritage Edition Supercab 4X2 w/4.2L & automatic, and I traded a 2000 Ranger Supercab 4X2 in on it 2yrs ago.

I like Ford's body styles & Chevy engines, so I combined the two, for me.....it's the BEST of both worlds.

Just my O2.....................
