Icon5 Information on a V8 swap.

Hello,

I have a 1984 Ranger 2wd with a 2.0 I-4 in it right now, but it is blowen. I am considering dropping in a 302 V8 but I have a couple questions.

Does the 1984 ranger have more room in the engine bay than the newer 1990's and 2000's rangers?

Also what is the best and easiest manual transmision to install behind the 302?

The truck is 2wd so I dont have to worry about the transfer case.

Thanks

Yes there is more room in your engine bay than the new trucks. The easiest 2wd transmission to run is the T5. I have it in my 302 truck and it works great. There is a VERY nice write up on the site on how to use the stock clutch master cylinder with a cheap slave cylinder setup.

ya i was going to when my engine blew up but i cant pass safety/smog crap cause the engine would need to be same year or newer... so no 5.0, and i wasnt willing to have the down time to put in a 4.6 or 5.4... although that would be bad *** as hell

they're making a new z28, its in testing right now, BUT i'd still rather have the new 5.0, it beat EVERYTHING on the car&driver test between and all the srt8's and camaro ss, and it was cheaper

Well $6k is way way out of my budget range! But I wouldnt mind it if some was to give me that engine I would sure drop it into my ranger!

Luckly here in Kentucky I dont have to worry about any emmissions testing. So I can do what ever I want to.
I guess that is part of the problem I can do what ever I want so I cant make up my mind.

The only thing that is holding me back is money! LoL

I have been working on cars and trucks since I was 12 or 13 and I can weld / fabricate ( although I dont have a welder right now )

I am just looking for ideals from all of you guys that have been messing around with these ranger for awhile.

u guys are all lucky, I live in the state with the most retarded smog laws, it will not pass smog unless the engine was originally an option with the car, sadly for my truck the 2.9l was the biggest thing u could get

be prepared for a lot of work, but it is alll worth it, if i could do it over again, i would take more time to do it right rather than do a quick throw together project. guess thats always the case tho..live and learn. i will prolly tear mine down in the next couple years and do a frame up restoration..
