Need Explorer Cluster Info
Truck's a 95 Ranger with 4.6. Computer is a 99 Mustang GT. Tranny is a 03 T-56. Problem is NO Speed. I was thinking of swapping in a cluster from an 99-00 Explorer 5.0. This would give me a v8 tach and a speedo that is compatable with my computer. Am I off track here? Do the 95 Ranger and the 99 Explorer really have different type speedos? It is possible I have a wiring problem. I know the guy who did the wiring and he's a dofus.
The Ranger and Explorer have the speed sensor in the rear axle. The Mustang uses one that's on the trans. I don't know if they both send the same type of signal or not, but I dought it. The signal may or may not go through the GEM module before it goes to the speedo, depends on what all your truck had.
When I did my 4.6 swap I grafted the Mark VIII guages into the Ranger cluster. That way I made sure the sensors, computer, and guages all worked together.
Good luck.

That depends on the model year. 95~97 Ranger/Explorer used a gear-driven VSS Signal Generator plugged into the transmission or transfer case but his is definitely gone now. He could use the rear axle ABS sensor with a converter box to drive the Ranger speedo or possibly do the same thing using the Mustang speed sensor.
That's odd. I pulled an 8.8" from a '95 4x4 Ranger and it had the speed sensor in the rear axle. Maybe it was just being used for the ABS/RABS.
Right. The rear axle ABS sensor has been there for about 20 years but it only did double duty as the VSS in 98~2000.
Good info guys. I read that a Mustang cluster is very close to a Ranger physically. One solution would be to get a 99 Mustang gauge cluster. I'm not sure how much different the mounting is. Has anyone done this? I can see from ones for sale that the plugs are different and would have to be changed. It would hopefully understand my Mustang computer and would have a v8 tach.
