Icon4 Time for a motor swap

Ok it's time to start saving for a new motor. Ima start saving now and so hopefully by the end of summer I have the money for everything. So I want to know what are all the things im looking to buy to do the swap. I need to know everything needed. I have a manual 99 xlt 2wd with a BL. What year engine would be the best n easiest to swap in?

Do you have any buddies with spare or old engines laying around ?
Exploder 5.0 is easiest if you can get everything from junkyard most have GT40 heads.
Are you wanting to keep your 5 spd or plan on using trans from donor vehicle?
Do you have emission laws where you are? 302 carb cheapest to grab from any 70's-80's passenger car. (and most came with duel sump pans stock)
I got the ranger for free and the motor combo for free, they are not the most ideal (98 std cab short and 302 Fi out of a F150) but its by far the cheapest. I'm hoping I can close the hood with that huge **** intake manifold on top of the motor.

Yeah thats what Im wanting to do, the exlporer 5.0, I dont have any buddies with a spare though, theres one at a jy right around me for $450 and I plan on using the tranny from the donor vehichle. Can you even use the ranger tranny on the explorer engine?

Icon10 sure

I saw a thread on TRS that says you can, but same thread says a 302 will dismantle it for you if you dont baby it...noone does this swap to 'baby' it.
i would use the explorer tranny, I'm dropping my mazda 5spd for the aod. Go to the ranger station, tech library, explorer swap. the whole swap, what you need from the doner, what trans cases work with it....good walk thru.

I keep seeig them say about the ranger 4x4 like: "Explorer bolts directly into a 1998+ 4x4 Ranger" and nothing about 2WD, does this mean the explorer 5.0 cannot be swapped into the ranger 2WD?

no it can, just more 4x4 guys are wanting the power for their needs, only difference should be tailhousing on the tranny since you dont need the transfer case, find a 2wd doner or grab a 4x4 sell the trans-case and find a 2wd tailhousing, shouldn't be too tuff, we had to play with tailshaft housings for my dad's f150. Yanked the 300 6cyl and crammed in a 460 bb. If I read it right the only difference in the swap is the motor mounts (depending on whether you have coil springs or torsion bar front end) one uses ranger v-6 mounts, other uses exploder mounts. Either way check out Advance Adapters, Summit Racing is a vendor, allmost everything they make is on summit's online catalog.
