V-8 Explorer question...

ok, so after checking out the saleen explorers. i've decided that my next car is either an SVT Contour, or an XLT Explorer. i want the saleen but their quite expensive and really really rare. but you can get a V-8 with AWD in the 4 door explorers and i was wondering if its possible to swap a 5 speed mustang tranny on the it and if it would all be compatable.

so...any takers???

I highly doubt the AWD transfer case would mate up to the Mustang (T5?) tranny. You could possibly have an adapter made for it?

The T5 wont mate to the AWD transfer case, but you could just make it 2wd with a T5, although that probably isn't what you want....

That is correct, if you want a 5-speed and want 4wd, you are looking at f150 5-speeds and an adapter to keep the awd tcase. You will also have a boatload of codes if you don't deal with the PCM.

word of advice.. i was really big into these cars in HS. tons of buddy's had them...

unless if you can find one under 50K on it and treat it well DO NOT buy one. the motor's when they get around 100K on them give or take, the Main crank Bearings spin in the block.. usually leaving the crank and block complete FUBAR. now you have two choices after that.. get another motor and put it in.. OR get a 3.0L out of a taurus turbo or supercharge it and implant it into the contour... this has been done MANY times. being the Jag X-type is the same vehical as the contour, and it also comes with a 3.0L its really easy to do...

yea, i've read up on the 3.0 swaps and IF i was to get one, thats what i would altimately do. i'd rather go with the explorer cuz i hate fwd (past car was a 93 intrepid es) it was no fun to drive, granted it was a granny car. but still haha.

so theres no sight for a 5 speed awd v-8 explorer in my future..damnit.

well, thanx for all the replies guys. i appreciate it.

I had a V8 awd mountianeer. (2003)

IMO just take one and loose as much weight as is possible. Then put a 100shot of nitrous on it as is. Between those two and it'll run a mid 14 in the 1/4

hahahahahahahahaha. omg...thats funny stuff. after driving FWD(intrepid), RWD(ranger), and AWD(WRX) the winner is surely not FWD.

on a differant note...are the explorer V-8's the same engine as the mustang V-8's? same 5.0 i should i say?

I doubt you could simply bolt up the mustang tranny. Advanced Adapters might have something that would work with your application but you'd need to contact them.

i built my own "saleen" explorer... love and miss that truck alot. I started with a 1996 Limited V8 AWD-

I did heads, cam, headers, exhaust, fuel system, supercharger, shift kit, suspension, wheels, etc....

I believe you are correct and if you want one, your going to pay for it too.

AWD boxes in V8 sploders are kind of weak though as is the front drive shaft in 98+ models. I've seen tons of threads on this over on EF.

My advise, start with a 2wd sploder to begin with if you want a street truck. Your gas will be cheaper and will be faster as you will not be dragging ~400# of extra AWD weight around with you. From my experience, explorers have great weight transfer from a standing take off and your front wheels won't be doing much at a hard launch anyway.

If you really want to put a 5 speed in, 2wd would be a much easier and cheaper swap too. You will just have to add your clutch system, make sure you have the proper drive shaft, find a center console from a 5 speed Sport or Sport Trac that matches your interior and have the computer reflashed to remove the slushbox functions.

im plannin a 5spd swap in my AWD mounty. i dont care about weight transfer on launches, i like the AWD for the snow and full-throttle corner exit traction.

the AWD t-case uses the 6bolt flange pattern, same as F150. F150 also uses the same hydro clutch setup as the RBV platform, so that part of the swap is cake. i plan to use a M5-R2 from a 5.0/4wd F150 for my swap.....only issue i forsee is the placement of the shifter; ill deal with that when i get there. dont forget programming.

That would probably work, but I think if you start putting real ponys (350+) to that 4404, your going to turn that viscious (sp?) coupling into lunch meat.

maybe so, but since im not buildin my mounty to that power level, it wont matter. also if that is the case it would be the same regardless of which tranny is in front of it.

I used to sing the praises of the 4404, but you can see by my signature that is no longer the "case". I have 2 of them sitting im my garage that I can't get rid of. I'm about to scrap them.

my 4404 held up great with the power of my supercharged 302 for 60,000+ miles before i sold the truck (total miles on the 4404 was 102,000 when sold)... and last i knew the new owner is not having any problems either.

if you want a 5.0L explorer with 5 speed manual why don't you just take the the 5 speed manual and transfercase from a f-150 and put under there. Then take your driveshafts and have them lengthened or shortened or the ends changed depending on how the f-150 transfercase goes. Thats way you have a 4x4 explorer with a v-8 and 5 speed manual you want. I'm sure if you sell the stock transmission and and AWD transfercase you'll make back a good amount of the money you put into it.
