8 inch woofers
8 inch woofers
Are 8 inch woofers even worth it? I can design a box for my reg cab that may hold 4 or so. So are 8 inch woofers even worth the money? I have 2 10s now and I just want something different. I love building boxes and such so this project would be fun times. Anyways any input would be appreciated Thanks.
i think 4 of them would be cool and different
4 SS RL-i 8's http://www.soundsplinter.com/rli_ser...formation.html
4 Tangband 8's http://www.partsexpress.com/pe/showd...number=264-833
maybe some jbl 8's or kicker 8s, but i like those^ up there

Ya I think the 10 is where it's at. I just bought a new table saw and wanna build something. Maybe I'll just buy new 10s and build a box for them. Or convince friends to buy systems so I can build their boxes.
There any decent 10s that aren't too deep? I saw the new pioneer shallow mounts and think they're sweet. I also saw the new Kickers. They're a round woofer with 600W rms and only a 5-15/16 depth or something. They're in between a L5 and L7. I think 2 of those would rock. I had 2 MTX 8000s before they were stolen and they hit hard. I just have so much I wanna do and it's tough weighing options and sticking with one thing...

I have 2 rockford fosgate P2 8's. They hit alright for eights, but I would definitely tell you to stick with 10s. 4 eights would probably hit pretty hard and be good for sound quality, but wouldn't hit low enough for many people's taste.
How about the small-box, small-size elemental subs?

0.5cubic feet, tuned to 30Hz is sweet for a sub that uses a 6" mounting hole

if ya listen to fast music or any rock for that matter i would deffinately run 4 8's so its more of a crisp sound than just a deep sound, the 8s in theory should be louder since you have more surface area, 32" vs. 20"
the surface area difference is more like 200 in^2 (4x8") vs. 157 in^2 (2x10")
I don't think 4x8 is worth it. In my head, assuming the subs are the same brand, same grade, etc, 8's have a different characteristic output over a 10". A single 8" will produce an "operational peak" at a higher frequency than a single 10". Thus installing four 8" subs may move more air than a 10", the sound output will still have that higher operational peak, so 8's might not sound as low as a 10".
This may sound confusing, so let me see if I can get a pic...

ok...so take this horrible, horrible graph to better explain what I'm guessing:

1.) You run a single 8" sub (the lower blue line)
-it doesn't hit as low
-it seems to be loudest ~80Hz
-it doesn't hit low or loud for rap music, but with your "Peter and the Wolf" CD, the sub really makes the frequency range of an oboe roar
2.) You run a single 10" sub (the lower green line)
-it hits lower than the 8"
-it seems to be loudest ~45 to 50Hz
-it really doesn't make an oboe loud (and sort of muffles it out), but it really makes your techno bass kick
3.) You run 2x8's or 4x8's (the raised blue line)
-yes...you have MORE surface area, so the subs push MORE air, thus it sounds LOUDER
-but by increasing the number of subs, I think you do, in fact, increase bass on the lower end, but you also also increase bass where the 8" sub hits well (~80Hz)
-since the 80Hz peak increased as well as the 45-50Hz bass, all you really hear is the 80Hz sound
-so in essence, you're still hearing the oboe with more 8's...except now it's just louder because it has more surface area. It doesn't necessarily mean more 8's will hit lower than a couple 10's.
Does this make sense?
Again...I'm not sure how this works, but vis a vis...this makes sense to me.
So what I'm trying to say is, stick to the 10's

My brother had 2 8s in his ranger, and I wasn't too impressed. It just didn't hit deep at all. I have 2 12s in my ranger, and they dont hit as deep as they could b/c of the small amount of airspace in the box, but im happy with it cause at least i've got bass. The bass is pretty crisp and tight though. They hit deeper in my old truck, b/c it had more airspace, but it wasn't as tight.
It just sucks having a Reg cab i think. I like the truck and all just the reg cab thing sucks. Maybe next will be a 4.0L Ext cab so I can do whatever I want. I think the 8s would sound killer and hard hitting, I dunno. It's not like I'm gonna stick with anything. As soon as I buy something I get tired of it and wanna build something bigger and better. The table saw is just beckoning me haha. Oh well I'll see what I can draw up on AutoCAD and see if this is even possible. Or I think I should save up for an ext cab. :D

i would do 4-8's ported. they would impress everyone and yourself and save space. you could look into http://www.ascendantaudio.com/assassin8specs.html <at $50 these are very nice subs. my old shop built a TL box for 2-6x9" MA AUDIO subs that was 36x12x10. well, this box with 2-6x9's and 600rms would hit 142dB's in the kick on the Termlab. simply impressive. sounded like 2-12's those who have heard mediocre 8's are using crappy subs or cant build their own box.
