i'm running a 500 watt amp to a 400 rms sub. I have the exact same issue, it doesn't matter where I put the amp. It always runs so hot you can't touch it or it will burn ur hand.

Some amps just run hot. A fan might help though.

I wouldn't worry about it. All the amps i have had run hot and I have never had a problem. Im sure the amp has a feature that makes it go into "protect" mode once it hits a certain temperature.

Try wiring the DVC sub to 8ohm, and turn up the gain a bit. I've found this to help in the past with other setups.

After we turned the head unit down to 6 it stopped getting as hot and stopped smelling. I also have the bass knob on mine and can play it at any level and not have any problems with the amp getting very hot . so You might try turning the head unit down one or two clicks.

yea thats what i did it stiil runs hot so i just keep the volume low and when it gets really hot i get that wonderful burning smell
btw my bass on head unit is a 4 and only 75% on the amp

oh and i have it wired correctly its wired down from 4ohm to 2ohm to match the amp

The only thing I can think of is you might need to either turn down your amp or you need to run a true 4 gauge wire

Well do you have the gain on the amp up and the bass on the headunit up? They will get pretty hot when work the hell out of them.

Gain shouldn't affect how the amp operates if it is set properly. I wish people would understand that a gain is not a volume knob. It is for level in adjustment.

Most amps have thermal protection but check to make sure yours does. If it gets hot enough to become a problem (damaging the system/starting a fire) it will shut itself off if it does have it. If the amp is getting hot enough to burn you in a moderate amount of time (with or without thermal protection) contact the manufacturer.
