amp gets really hot?
 

i just put in my system a while ago and i noticed the amp is getting really hot its a 500 rms watt amp hooked up to a 400 rms sub and running 6 ga power wire i have it sitting on the floor right now so it can kinda breath

is there a prob with the way i hooked it up or it just gets hot?

mine gets warm too lol i thinks that just how amps are

mine get pretty warm. not burn your hand hot but on the warm side.

i was thinkin about puttin a fan out of a computer on it and wire it in with the remote power wire has anyone done this b4

Well do you have the gain on the amp up and the bass on the headunit up? They will get pretty hot when work the hell out of them.

It will get warm. However if it gets too hot it will shut itself off. I would runner thicker gage wire than 6. Atleast 4 gage, could help. It also depends on how its wired, whether its a 1 ohm, 2ohm, or 4ohm, single or dual voice coil. Some other guys on here can be more help Im sure.

i have the bass half way and the gain right in the middle as well i dont want to put it up all the way till its broken in

well the power wires say 4ga but look more like 6ga and its a DVC 4ohm wired at 2 ohms to the amp

Is the amp capable of running at 2 ohms?

It should blow fuses if it's not.

yea its 2 ohm capable i thought maybe i was running to big of power wires but idk

Too big of a wire wouldn't cause it to run hot. Even with the small wire the amp will only take what it needs. Maybe its just a hot running amp.

What brand? It might just be an inefficient model that makes heat better than it boosts music.

Is it a class d amp? If it's not it will run 'hot'. My kenwood amp used to run pretty warm, almost hot to touch.

I have a sundown 1200 that I just put in and it doesn't get hot at all. It has vents on the bottom that I had to space it off the back wall. You could be over working the amp, I would run a min of 4ga for the power/ground and make sure all your connections/ground are clean. If your running your amp at low load also it will run hot.

The purpose of the gain is to match the signal volts RMS coming from the source (CD player, etc.) to the input of the amp for correct power matching and to prevent clipping....

its a kenwood monoblock amp 1000 watt

has anyone tried to hook a fan up to it and have it come on when the amp comes on? if so please explain i think ima try that

Nice idea as long as the fan is not drawing power off of the remote line. If power was just tapped from the positive and negative terminals of the amp and a relay was used to turn the fan on only when powered up, then that would be fine. I doubt it will help much. Pictures of you amp? Might help to take the cover off, unless it acts as a heat sink and pulls heat away, then not a good idea to remove it.

fans are used alot for hot amps.

i have 3 amps in my truck one too each sub one for speaker my two sub amps get very hot too. it would be hard too hold your hand on it for over 10 seconds my installer said its just the way they work

i doubt you need a fan, you probably dropped the ohms too low. check how you have you subs wired. are they bridged? they may be lower than you think.

My Kicker ZX300.1 was getting super hot about halfway threw the breakin period, come to find out we had the sub setting on the head unit set to like 8 and the amp would start to smell if i played it very hard for a long period of time. After we turned the head unit down to 6 it stopped getting as hot and stopped smelling. I also have the bass knob on mine and can play it at any level and not have any problems with the amp getting very hot . so You might try turning the head unit down one or two clicks.
