Beware if you get navigation...

For those thinking of layin down a few bucks on a navigation unit, I would recommend a double-din design rather than fold out...I got a pioneer avic n2 which I love as a unit, but I didn't take into account that when I fold out the screen, it blocks the middle two air vents for the A/C! Kind of a pain when you wanna run the a/c, and you can't have the screen open, or you might damage the unit from the chilled air...just a little FYI...gonna sell the n2 on fleabay and upgrade to the new Z3 double din, but it's gonna cost an xtra 5 bills or so

My plan is to go with the D3 as well. I love how the double-din looks.

I think you'll have to do a bit of trimming to fit a double-din unit.

When I put my HU in, I was told it's not a double din. It's more like 1.5. So I'm told

It's close. From what I've heard you can fit one but it does involve some trimming. Some double-din units seem to have a larger sleeve and wider front bezel that lets the body fit better if you don't use the mounting sleeve.

But no, Ford's cutout is "proprietary" and not a double DIN size hole. That's why when you look at double din units they don't advertise them as fitting Fords.

Only a very few manufacturers make a Ford-specific fit unit -- most sell adapters for regular single din players.

they make the kits. look on ebay. a small amount of trimming is involved inside the radio bezel. theres a small 'lip that needs to be grinded down to square so the unit can fit through.

and my old flip out blocked my a/c vents. i ran it with the air on all the time and it never did anything to it.

here's a pic of the double din:

I have the Kenwood DDX6019 in dash 7" w/their KNA-G510 navigation system and I love it. Found a ATM for my bank closer to home buy using its search feature.
I looked into a flip up but didn't like the idea of having it flopping around while offroad. Didn't even think about it sitting in front of the air ducts. Had to do a little trimming at the bottom of the bezel and used a aftermarket install kit and it looks factory.

id like to see how cold air hurts a flip out. Unless you have some crazy cold ac, its not going to get that cold to do damage. If anything, hot air would hurt it.

And also, some year rangers and explorer's radio bezels has cutoffs on the middle vents. I know mine did

The screen gets hot. Cold air blows and causes condensation. That is bad for the screen.

Dang man I wish I had cut offs for mine!!! I dont mind it....if it gets to hot I just use the defroster on cold and it works pretty good lol...for heat just use the floor vents! Or.....you could fold down the screen lol

If your car is exposed to cold ambient temps long enough, the screen is going to get colder than it would from a/c.

That double din deck looks awesome, but it's going to get stolen...

What kind of install kit would I need for a 2 DIN? Are they universal kits or are they model specific?

You do. Not much, but maybe 1/16in on the top and bottom then a double din dash kit slides right in.

Serious?! My d3 takes me right to the point i need to! They have 2 different ways of routing you... Have you played with both? I wanna say one is fast the other is short...

Double dins are notorious for thieves since they rarely fit well with the din bracket. Most times friction is enough to hold them in place but also making them easier for parking lot prowlers. Plus they're amazingly hot items, sure to put a couple rocks in your pipe!
