Converting rear speakers to 8" subs?
I've got a 12" subwoofer in a home made box right now. It sounds great, but I want to get rid of the box and have more room in the back. I'm thinking of changing out my speakers in the suicide doors, widening the speaker holes, and installing 8" subwoofers. I currently have a pioneer 240 watt amp that I'd use to amplify the subs.
Has anyone done this before? Or anybody familiar with the area behind the door, will it sound alright if it is not sealed? I do not need a whole lot of bass coming out of them, just lower bass than what I get from the 5x7's.
Any help would be appreciated.

I agree on the airspace, but even so, the stock speakers use that airspace, and all I am looking for is some lows that the stockers don't put out. As for the rattling, there is none whatsoever back there.
I'm thinking if the air space is really going to be a big problem, I could try to fiberglass the space inside the doors, but I don't know much about fiberglassing, nor how thick it would have to be. For the wires, they don't have to be too large for that amount of wattage, and I could run that through the gromet to the door where the old wires would be.

my pioneer 6x8s hit pretty hard for just speakers, why not just get some 6x8s and mount them back there and run an amp to them. ive heard if you power all your door speakers it makes a world of difference.
thats my plan anyway. power the door speakers 6x8 pioneers in the back and some polk high quality 6x8s in the front.

I'm not going for components, because i'm looking for lower end bass that I don't believe a 5x7 can put out. As for the 6.5", I think the 8" should be able to produce more lower end bass. Please correct me if I'm wrong. I'm accustomed to hearing bass coming from a 12" sub, so I don't want to lose too much of the low end bass.

I honestly dont think there is enough space behind there to make a box of the right size that will sound halfway decent.

ive actually had a pair of 6.5" subs in a past ranger that i owned. they sounded decent, but they definitely didnt hit the lower bass. since then, ive had 2 12's in a car, and a 10 in my truck now. and the best sounding one ive had so far is the 1 10" sub. it hits low bass and the quality is great. maybe you should try to find a 10 with a small box? hmmm... just a thought.

And by the way to the guy up there about not having enough space for a good enough box..I have a 12" Massive in my single cab now with a box to the size it needs. It has atleast 1 cubic foot of airspcace.
of course the passenger lost a lot of legroom but thats not my problem. I have more than enough room :)

ed audio makes a nice 6.5" mid/sub that handles the duty very well. put those in the rear with very minor modification and some sound deadener abd you should be happy. at 100 a pair they are decently priced and you could always make a box for them and they handle sub duties very well look at this install>>> http://www.icixsound.com/vb/showthread.php?t=16402
