deck question

on any unit when you plug in an ipod to the front aux input can you control it through the ipod itself rather than through the unit. i know a lot of units have ipod control when its plugged in through the usb but id rather use the ipod to control i dont want to get a unit i cant control through the ipod

There is an aux input for the stock stereos or you can just use the aux input of an aftermarket stereo if you don't want the stereo to control the ipod. The ipod wont get charged though.

I believe you "have to" use the iPod controls when using the aux port on any head unit.
My girl has a aux port on her stock Nissan HU and has to use the iPod to change songs and such and to fine tune the audio level. When she's not looking I can turn the volume down on her iPod and it lowers the volume through the car speakers. I can do the same with the Ranger's aux port. Her mom has a 08 Solaris with an aux port and it's the same but the stock Solaris HU needs to be at volume 50 to hear the iPod. Don't know why thats messed up like that.

I think the key is where you plug into the ipod as well as the stereo. As far as I know the ipod won't transmit information from the headphone jack, just the jack that you plug into when loading music.

As for the stereo, about a year ago I was looking for a few 2 dins w/ the aux input on the front... luckily they're all cheap (as long as you don't get the touch/nav screen) since no one wants them... unfortunately they're also pretty rare. I found a few at CarToys but they were closing out the one I really liked... about $100 including installation at the time. I haven't looked since over a year ago though 'cause I said f**k it and bought a new truck instead :-D

Look at all the new (2008) Pioneer HU's. Almost all but the absolute lowest models have a USB port for Ipods or other Mp3 players. This allows the Ipod to be controlled and charged through the head unit.

Check out the pioneer DEH-P5000UB, thats the one I have. It costs less then $200 and will also receive satellite and HD radio (you have to buy and adapter though).

Honestly, once you get a deck that will controll the ipod, you wont want to use anything else. Mine has a wheel/**** so it works exactly like the ipod control. i just stash the ipod in the glovebox and never take it out unless i want to put new music on it.

i also NEVER use the CD player anymore.

this is the head unit that i have purchesed and it works very good nice sound and has a high max volume. it also has a aux port in the front that will allow you to control your music from your mp3 player. the only thing is that you would need to purchase an aux cord, they are like 3-4$ at walmart.

Isn't anything after a 95 a din and a half....

I have a pioneer with a aux output, for my Zune.. that and the AM is all that gets used...

I went with my purchace because of the green lighting matching the factory green dash lighting and the aux input... other than that Im really not a big stero buff...

Agreed... I only use the CD player on extremely short trips (usually that's the radio though) and if I happen to forget the iPod...

I've owned 3 pioneer units and never had any sort of malfunction or problem, mind you, i try and take really good care of my electronics. Right now I have a Pioneer AVH-P4000 dvd unit and I could die a happy man.
