Im looking to upgrade stock speakers and need help
I just bought a 2002 Ford Ranger FX4 and am upgrading the stock system.
I am going to put in the Alpine CDA 9833 headunit
and Im thinking about adding 4 Alpine Type S speakers that push out 200 watts RMS and 2 matching tweeters. I think this will sound good but my dilemna is I just sold a car that had a 12" sub and I will not be adding a sub to the ranger so Im going to miss out on the bass I used to have.
Does anyone know if the Alpine Type S puts out decent bass and if not, what other speakers may put out better bass.
Moneys not really an issue...I want something nice
Thanks
Jay

ALPINE!!! yes!!!
i have a total alpine system
cd player : cda-9811
speakers: 5x7 type s 3 ways
subs: type s 10"....(currently for sale)
i have the door speakers amplified...they sound amazeing...trust me...but go ahead and get 6x8's instead of the 5x7's...the bass response will be better, but people in the loop have told me that the 5x7's have a better high range output for some reason.
go with alpine, totally!!!!!

I had all kenwood.. Then they stole my sub...
I love my door speakers... 6x8's in the rear, and 5x7's in the front...
I had the door speakers amped when i had the sub stolen, and WOW, talk about loud...
I now have a 12" Sony Xplod, in a custom enclosure...Nasty little thing..
If your not about bass... Go for the amped door speakers, its fun...
Mine almost killed me..lol.. Let us know what you decide...

you know the 02s have 6x8s all the way around right?
i dont want to cut anything at the moment. im scared to drill two 1/2" holes to mount two switches. i dont know why though. i just got done taking out the back seats and the jackholder dohicky. never had a used for them and jack is in the toolbox.

I ran some Pioneer TSA-6880R's all the way around. They are 6x8 4-way speakers that did me just fine. I went from having a 8" sub in my Focus to not one in the Ranger but an upgraded 4-speaker sety and it was just about as good.
Do the same speaker throughout the cab, it will harmonize better.

Nearly all 6x8's and 5x7's are interchangable. But the Rangers did indeed come with 6x8's:

The key to getting good bass reproduction from the door speakers, is a good still baffle. The "enclosures" they are currently in are just barely better than free air. A set of baffles (you can find foam ones just about any stereo shop) will really help out on the lower frequencies. I even used silicone to seal my baffles to my speakers, and to seal the little hole for the speaker wire. My next plan is to spray some type of hardener on them to help it even more.
I'm partial to Polk Audio. but Honestly the major difference between the various manufacturers are just nuances in sound reproduction and quality (longevity) of the materials, when all other things (power handling and sensitivity) are equal.

alpines are a good starter's set.. the simple fact that you're going from stock to aftermarket alone is going to make the system sound 200% better. like everyone else is mentioning tho, replace with 6x8s if anything. if you wanted even better sound quality tho, i'd look into some component sets, then use 6x9s for rear fill.
if money isnt an issue, and you're looking for a set to do well wth bass, i'd maybe look into some 6x9 MB Quarts.. i just installed a set in my friends 01 Mustang, they do well. he doesnt depend on them for bass though ever sinse i gave him my 2 12wO jl subs.. but regardless, they still held their own!

yes, components will also help out the high and low sound quality....
the oval shaped cones on our door speakers can do the job, but not as well as a round one...
a guy in my town has two sets of alpine type r components amped to a pheonix gold 600w amp, and 3 type r 10's in a cut thru powred by (i think) a 2000w amp.....and its all in a single cab Ranger....he'll be deaf soon.....

Nobody mentioned Infinity??? Infinity kicks everyones *** every day of te week. Get a pair of Infinity Kappas, they have a tweeter that you can adjust to point in different directions, a magnet the size of a Whopper and a built in crossover.
Ive amped these on two different amps, a Kenwood and currently a MTX 404. I have a custom system so my rear firewall is pretty much stripped and cut. I only have 2 speakers in my truck, in the front the two Kappas. They sound great for imageing purposes also and I can gaurntee you my two speakers amped are louder than everyones on here.
Even if you don't get Kappas you can ge Referance and they still sound great!!

Ok, ok, instead of just saying my brand sounds best, how about let's get a budget and some specs to work with.
The 9833 delivers 26 watts RMS per 4 channel (CEA-2006 Compliant). Now recommending a speaker rated for 100 watts RMS will underpower the speaker, or in all likelyhood damage it if the volume is turned up too high.
Crutchfield linky
Click the above link and see which models best match the head unit's power output.
See which one has the highest sensitivity (the higher the number, the more efficient/louder the speaker) You may also notice the warranties, which may imply structural integrity and reliability. Frequency response gives you an idea of how the speaker will perform, but like Red_Ak_Ranger pointed out in the 2nd post, nothing beats listening to the speaker in person.

It's not my brand is the best it just is. Ive been through so many setups in my truck it's not even funny. Ive done comparisons to other speakers in it's class and Kappas outperform all.
I even have a pair of Kappas I will give to you cheap if you desire, there is a small crack in the tweeter but still sounds great! My second choice would be the alpines (for speakers or hu only) they sound pretty good
