L5 or L7

Well, I have been doing some upgrading on my truck as far as audio goes lately. I got an Alpine 9852 H/U, which is amazing btw, and alpine type s 5x7's front and back. With that said, I am now looking to add a little more thump to my system and want to add a subwoofer. I am set on kicker as the brand, don't ask why that's just the way it is Now, the amp that I am looking to get is a KX600.1 which throws out 600 watts at 2ohms. Now the thing I have been debating over is whether or not it would be better to get a 12" L5 600 watts RMS, or a 12" L7 750 watts RMS. Both are DVC 4Ohms and would be wired to 2Ohms. So I guess the question would be wheter it would be better to have an underpowered sub that can handle more, or a sub that handles less that is fully powered..? Sorry if this is kind of a simple question, I am new to this whole audio scene. Thanks in advance for the advice!

so you're saying you can still get good results out of an underpowered sub then? It's just that the L5 is a bit cheaper than the L7 and I was wondering if it would be worth it...

I have a 12" L5 in my truck now and it hits really hard!! i would definitly reccamend it! I'm running mine with a 836watt Infinity amp, but i was originally goin to get the exact same setup, but i got a deal on the infinity amp. Are u building a custom box?

I was going to start out with just a normal sealed box, maybe something off ebay I'm not 100% sure on that. However, in the future I would love to build my own box, back about a year ago when I was really into like the tuner scene and all that I learned a bunch about fiberglassing and my dad knows a bit about it too so sometime in the future I would love to design and build a custom fiberglass box. But for now with the limited time I have, especially right now with sectionals for hockey, I just don't have the time to build it so I'll have to stick with the standard pre-fab box.

thats cool just make sure u get one with enouph airspace cause that will be the downfall of the sub, my friend has the exact same sub as me with a ported box that is to small and it sounded like crap compared to mine, i just bought a Prefabbed Kicker box and put it behind the seat for mine.

Was your box ported or sealed? Also, what seat did you put it behind driver or passenger I was wondering about that...

Anyway, back to the original question I had, sounds like everyone here opted for the L5 instead of the L7, maybe I'll have to go that route, I was originally planning on the L7, but given that the L5 will sound nearly as good it would be good to save some money.

You have to double the power to get 3db... so yeah, 150W really wouldn't make much of a difference at all when you get that high...

You would have to put at least 1000-1200W to notice a difference.

the 600.1 doesnt put out 600 watts its like 700 or more..so your only underpowering a lil..you get a custom box and port it you will be good to go..you wont tell a difference...but if you an L7 id only get a 12" cuz the 15" are like 1500 i think correct me if im wrong thats a lil to much over the limit..so i think id stick to the L5s...my 2 cents
