I need help diagnosing my speaker problem.

My rear speakers don't work. They don't crackle or anything, which makes me think they are unhooked or the wires are cut.

I don't have a multimeter or any device to test the wires.

How can I tell if my speakers are the culprit?

Also, my front speakers are wired up wrong. When I "balance" on the cd deck, left is right and right is left.

The previous owner obviously didn't know what he was doing.

Any help is appreciated.

 

Pull the deck and reverse the front speakers. That will fix the left right problem. Check to see if your rear speakers are even connected to the deck. If they are pull one of the speakers out and pull on the wires

 

also depending on the year , the rear speakers are individually amplified so it could be back feeding to the deck if one of the amps are fired......

have you pulled the rear speakers yet?

 

i would run new wires from the deck to the rear speakers, problem solved

 

my front speakers will cut out on me,i'm guessing it a short in the door somewhere since i can give the door around the speakers a good whack and they start working again for a while just pull the speakers the wires they might now even be hooked up

 

stevo, your situation, honestly, i wouldn't **** around... just run new wires...

 

i had problems with my front right speaker. i just ran whole new wires to every speaker. not that hard. just takes a lil bit of time. and its nice to know that speakers are done right.

 

you can run new wires. but for someone thats new to this its not a fun task with the door boots and all...but to each his own..i would pull all the speakers and replace them, and make sure the new connections are good and you shouldn't have anymore issues....

 

I guess I'll be rewiring it then.

I've put this problem on the back burner for now though. I have a freeze plug leak.

is this an after market unit? if so, I'll bet the guy didn't wire together correctly, try pulling the unit and checking all of the connections first (give the wires a nice tug), make sure every wire is connected to a wire of equal color (could be why your left speaker is right and right is left).

 

Oh, I got it figured out. The guy apparently installed the stereo himself, and the factory harness for the stereo was cut off. I got the wire colors from Crutchfield for my truck. I had to wire the harness from my new stereo directly to the wires in my truck. And my back speakers were shot. I hooked up my home stereo speaker and it worked, so I bought new back speakers. Sounds great now!

 

And yes, even though it was time consuming, it's nice to know everything is done right. The guy at Soundworld, where I bought my 5x7s, asked if I wanted them installed (which they charge $40 for!). I just got done with the stereo, so was fairly confident I could do it. Started when I got back home, took me less than 10 minutes total. He even gave me speaker wire and connectors. The speakers came with them, but he said it was crap, so he GAVE me the better stuff.

 

nice, yea it sucks when someone installs something that is out of their ability range...i personally would have grabbed a factory harness from a JY and wired it up to that (which is what i do with all of my head units) so this way if you ever need to remove it, its quick and simple.
