Last week, I took out my rear 5x7's, did a little cutting, and installed some new pioneer 6x9's. These ones: http://www.netdropshipper.com/product_expd/16/365 I love the way they sound, and I am thinking of putting them in the front as well. I've currently got a set of polk 5.25's there but one of them has a problem where it can't handle certain types of bass (For example Cheryl Crow's 'Soak Up the Sun' drum beat), it almost sounds like its blown, but then its fine for other types of bass. Would these 6x9's be a good replacement for the 5.25 Polks? The Polks have really good bass themselves, I just want to get rid of that damn speaker giving me problems... and I want to gain some affordable bass, not lose it.

Side note- I used a $50 gift certificate for Best Buy and cash to pick these up for I think $80. It really ties my undies in a knot seeing that I could have gotten them shipped out to me for about half the price. Next time I'll be researching before going to Best Buy.

 

Right now i am running polks all they way around. They sound awsome with the highs. Bass they sound good. But with me running 2 12" subs there's no need for me to run bass out of the polks. so i just use them as miy highs. As far as putting pioneers in place of them..............me personally i def take polk way over pioneer. imo tho

 

Another example my frind had pioneers at on point then replaced them w the same polks i got. and the bass sounded mucho better!

 

What do you have for a head unit? You might find you get more of a sound quality bost by swaping out the head unit for something more powerful.. or by adding an aftermarket amplifier. I have since gone to 5x7 Boston's up front.. but for a while I was running the stock speakers w/ my aftermarket head unit. It sounded surprisingly good!

 

Currently it is stock, and I have been thinking the same thing about a new headunit- I just like the stock look at the moment. I brought up my old 4 channel amp from my parents house yesterday, as well as my 5x7 Audiobahns that I used for only a week (forgot why I took them out) I may try to replace the Polks with the Audiobahns to see if they actually sound somewhat decent or not… I’ll probably throw the amplifier into the mix this weekend.

Really all I want to do is to have good bass without using a subwoofer, and I want to get rid of that damn 5.25 Polk that’s making me fade my music to the rear. The distortion is minimal, but I just can’t take it anymore.

 

Another question

I believe that I have seen some sort of product that goes behind the speaker to create a closed airspace and help the bass sound a bit better. Does anybody know of what these are called, where I can find them, and how well they work?

I have Pioneer's in my doors and Jensens in the back. Occasionally I heard what sounds like low rattling from the right door speaker on certain tones. I believe that may be the lousy construction of our doors producing a noise that sounds like a blow cone. I know it's not the speaker, since it tests fine, and I use sound deadening.

Thanks for the info George, I'll make sure that its the speaker that's making the noise before I go about spending the money to replace the pair.

I understand the desire to keep the stock look.. but I honestly think the biggest bang-for-the-buck improvement is made by putting a better head unit in. Although you may be able to acomplish the same or similar improvement by adding an amp. Another option is you could put a high-pass filter in to the speakers and install a small, dedicated sub/amp setup.

My Kenwood improved the sound quality in my setup enough to suit my needs.. I only installed the aftermarket Boston's up front because I had them. In the end the sound quality improvement wasn't worth the $$ I would have spent for the speakers new. .. But then I don't listen at high volume levels either.

 

I had the 6 disc changer in mine when I bought my truck new in '02, and only a couple of months went by then the cd player ate all 6 cd's. Not to mention that the head unit didn't sound all that great. I replaced it w/the pioneer that I took out of my previous vehicle and the sound quality was surprisingly better even with the stock speakers. I've got to get a new head unit since the cd player quit after 6 years. So, I guess it's better to replace the head unit first, you will be surprised what it will do. Not to mention, it will last longer.

 

Sorry Doug, I can't take any photos of the current setup, you can't see the speakers with the door panel over them. If I do the same thing for my front speakers, I'll take photos for you. Just keep in mind that these didn't fit directly, I had to use the template on the front of the box and cut out the space for the speakers.

Update on my situation

I took apart the door panel, and tested out the 5.25 Polk. It is definitely blown. Its odd because it doesn't sound bad at all when its inside the door with the dynomat, but when you take it out of the door, it sounds like crap.

I installed one of my 5x7's to see how it sounded in there and it was pretty good, but not the quality I want, so I have ordered another set of 6x9's for the front. I noticed when using the 5x7 that it shook the door a bit, so I ordered a set of baffles to keep from having the door vibrate with the bass.
