Doing the research to install a tailgate-mounted backup camera in my 2006 Sport, this information answers a good portion of my questions, thanks for sharing!

This wire is located in the main harness above and to the left of the brake pedal. It is a black wire with a purpleish pinkish stripe. NOTE: There are two wires that are this color, only one is correct. One of them runs up behind the headunit and into the harness there, it is NOT the correct one. The one you want to use is thicker and does not run to the center of the trucks dash. If your truck is a 2004 or newer this wire doesn't enter the cab at all, you will need to run your wire under the truck and connect it to the wire on the transmission itself.
Thank you for this picture! I had a rear view backup camera but never could find the back up wire. I ended up tapping off my reverse light. I however have changed my backup camera since it went bad and I wanted to hardwire it to the 12v accessory wire and then I could turn it on via my head unit any time I wanted. The headunit also has the reverse sensing wire. I always looked for that reverse sensing wire in behind the radio and it never worked. Found the wire in the driver foot well just as the picture you have posted above.

Works like a charm. I throw it into reverse and it automatically switches to the camera. Put it back into drive or park and it goes back to normal display. I wish I would have found this thread years ago. It's nice looking at the back up image that is bigger than the little 4" screen that was in my rear view mirror. Plus now I am changing the mirror for a gentex auto dimming since I had lost that feature with the lcd. Now I won't get blinded anymore...lol

Old thread but this was super helpful!!

what I found on the 2001 Ford Ranger XL manual is that the bk/pk wire for the reverse switch on the transmission, switches ground so if you do splice at the tranny, make sure you pick the wire once the tranny is in reverse, not the constant ground otherwise your camera will never go off when not in reverse.

I had issues locating in the area you describe so I ended up running the wire under the carpet to the wire bundle that's under the drivers seat and tapped into the blk/pnk wire there. The cable for my HU came with enough length for me to do that.
