how much quality do you lose from 6.5s to 5.25s? (and how do you mount 6.5s)

I will be upgrading my speakers for my b-day in a month. Do you lose that much quality from 6.5s to 5.25s?

I don't know how much of a pain it would be to adapt the doors for 6.5s, anyone done it?

as for the speakers it's inbetween alpine type-x and focal polyglass v2s.

they'll be running off of the stock 6cd and an alpine v12 that can send 120w (RMS) to each.

they are paired up with a JL 10w3 in a sealed box.

I would imagine the only difference would be bass response and I doubt it would be hard to mod the doors for 6.5s

Unless mounting 6.5s is unusually hard I will be going with 6.5s.

I guess the 5.25 was only relevant if mounting 6.5s is a huge undertaking AND I wouldn't lose too much sq/volume.

You're buying Focals and don't know the diff between 6.5" and 5.25" speakers...

Make sure you buy them from a dealer. Woud be a pity to pay 500 bucks for a set and something goes wrong and Focal won't help you.

To mount them where a 5.25" would be, buy some 1/2" or 3/4" Birch from LOWES or Home Depot and mount the speakers on that. Make sure you do some sound damping before, or that Focal speaker you're buying will sound like a set of 36-way taiwan knockoffs.

i have 6.5's.. they're not hard at all to fit in the door. in fact, i didnt even make a mounting ring (i know, i know, im an idiot...home depot was closed that night and i wanted it done, lol). i just placed the speaker in the door, and poped 4 screws right in (i do have matting all around it, covering the space left behind, but thats still no excuse.. i really should rip them back out and make correct mounting brackets for them.)

I'm still learning bud, that's why I asked the question. They're being bought through an online dealer. Yes, he's a dealer. 500? Try $200 for the access or $250 for the polyglass.

thanks, strider. i can rig a mounting bracket easy, i was just worried i might have to take the saw-zall and trim the door frame a bit, and i wanted to avoid that.

yeah they should fit towards the center of the opening just fine. (unless their baskets are oversized or something). even if they're tight, just take a pair of snips and trim out a little bit, it wont be much work at all. sounds harder than it is most likely.

Yup, 6.5" speakers in the door is no problem. Just build mounting plates yourself or you can purchase some scosche adapters from cardomain that will fit perfectly into the Ford openings for 6.5" speakers.

I just put 6.5" Infinity Reference comps in our B4000 no problems.

Also, be wary of an online dealer who says he is authorized by Focal, to my knowledge there are no online sellers that are authorized Focal dealers:

http://www.focal-america.com/catalog/policy.htm

And the Focal is an excellent choice. I am hoping to put a set of Focals in my own car very soon. I listened to the K2P and fell in love with them. Now if only I could come up with a way to afford them.

damn. we'll he said he'd service bad speakers, and he has like 5000 feedback. i'll be careful, but the only ones i can afford are online.

yeah, the k2p's are freaking awesome. sound like the instruments are in the room. :: maybe one day.....

Yup, the product you get in many cases if the dealer has a lot of positive feedback is a legit product. You just may not get warranty service from Focal or whomever it is because you purchased from a non-authorized dealer if something should ever go wrong. In that case you are at the mercy of the dealer.

Another brand to check out, DLS.

http://www.dlsamerica.com

I was totally sold on purchasing Focal K2Ps, but others have convinced me to at least the give the DLS speakers a listen. I spent 20 minutes on the phone with a dealer of the DLS Iridium 6.2s yesterday and pending a listen I might go in that direction instead of Focals. The other good news, they are jsut a bit more affordable than the focal K2Ps even though I found a killer deal on K2Ps from an authorized dealer.

If you can't afford the DLS Iridiums at least try and take a look at the next step down in their line.

If anybody has some pictures of the mounting plate or the install please post them. I have a set of 6.5, and the Scosche adapters. The adapters are for 5.25 even thought they say for 5.25 and 6.5 in their literature. I could take the dremel to them and enlarge the opening to fit. The material looks to thin to securely mount the speaker.

I've never heard anything good about those plastic mounting ring things. you could trace them onto some birch and cut em out with a jigsaw. I heard from a friend that they vibrate more than the door panels.

Would it be a good idea to get some of them 6.5" Speaker brackets and trace them onto steel?

This really would be ideal.

Alternatively, you could layer up two of the scosche adapters and stick them together with a high strength adhesive to make it thicker and of course add dynamat too it.

But in an ideal world you would trace the adapter and create it out of birch.
